Fall 2023: Classical Musical at The Mainstay

September 12, 2023 by The Mainstay

Share

Season Features Baroque Instrument Ensemble, Piano Duo, and Classical Guitar

Three exciting programs of classical music are scheduled for the Fall 2023 season at the Mainstay in Rock Hall, one of the premier music venues on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The shows are made possible with funding support from the Hedgelawn Classical Music Series at the Mainstay in honor of Judy Kohl.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer such quality music to our audiences this Fall,” said Mainstay Executive Director Matt Mielnick recently. “The first of these three creative programs features Washington’s Camerata, a trio playing authentic period Baroque instruments. Rounding out the series will be performances by the piano duo of Mada (Madalina) Danila and Hugh Sung and world-renowned classical guitarist William Feasley.

The Fall Season’s First Concert

Washington’s Camerata is a trio currently based in Fredericksburg, Virginia at the historic St. George’s Episcopal Church. Established in 2009, the period instrument ensemble’s name pays homage to the Washington family, co-founders of the Washington Parish at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Oak Grove, Virginia, which was Washington’s Camerata’s first home.

According to the group’s harpsichordist, Bozena Jedrzejczak Brown, the program will consist of pieces by well-known Baroque-era composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Arcangelo Corelli, and Francois Couperin as well as pieces by less-familiar composers Girolamo Frescobaldi, Michel Blavet, and Nicolas Chédeville.

Joining Brown for this concert will be Baroque Cellist Zane Baker and Kelly Kazik on Baroque Flutes and Recorders. The musicians will entertain questions after the performance so that the audience can become better acquainted with the Baroque instruments.

“These are not mainstream instruments,” Brown said. “We are happy to interact with people when they want to see the instruments up close and learn more about them.”

Season Concert Information

All concerts are on Sunday afternoons at 4 PM.

Sunday, September 24 — Washington’s Camerata

Sunday, October 22 — Mada and Hugh Piano Duo

Sunday, November 12 – Pianist Michael Casey

Tickets for each concert are $15.00 (plus $1.30 fee) if ordered in advance on the Mainstay’s website: mainstayrockhall.com. Phone reservations are accepted by calling (410) 639-9133 (tickets reserved by phone are $20 when paid at the door).

Tickets may be also available for $20 on the day of the performance.

The Mainstay is located at 5753 N Main Street in Rock Hall.

Music Trio Mad Agnes on Stage at Mainstay September 23

September 4, 2023 by The Mainstay

Share

On Saturday, September 23 at 8 pm, the Mainstay in Rock Hall, Maryland enthusiastically welcomes back the genre-bending acoustic music trio Mad Agnes to its stage.

Mad Agnes (Margo Hennebach, Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders) weaves Celtic, folk, and vocal improv into an exciting, inclusive performance.

Their current iteration sees them using only one microphone, around which they form and re-form, early-radio style. This encourages more playfulness and connection to their audiences as they deliver their robust harmonies, incisive songwriting and well-crafted instrumentation, using guitars, mandolin, percussion, an inventive keyboard, and “three-part harmonies as tight as jeans from the dryer” (Rob Weir, The Advocate). Their stage presence is as polished and entertaining as their music.

Mad Agnes has performed at most of the major listening rooms and festivals throughout the Northeast, including The Kerrville Folk Festival (TX), Mountain Stage New Songs Festival (WV), The Birchmere (VA), Godfrey Daniels (PA), The Bitter End and the Towne Crier (NYC), and a number of international venues. Margo Hennebach performed in our area at the popular Andy’s Bar in Chestertown some years back.

As music critic Robert Lundquist describes their unique sound, “If you’ve been struggling to find a link back to that addictive music of progressive/alternative folk groups like Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention and Renaissance, listen up…Mad Agnes recreates with authenticity many of the musical qualities that adored us to those legendary groups.”

Showtime for the live concert event is 8 pm. Tickets are $20 in advance of the show and can be purchased online at mainstayrockhall.org. Phone reservations are accepted by calling (410) 639-9133 (tickets reserved by phone are $25 when paid at the door).

The Mainstay is located at 5753 N Main Street in Rock Hall, Maryland. Its regular calendar of local, regional, and nationally touring artists features a live performance every week of the year (February through December) in a wide variety of music genres.

The programs of the Mainstay are supported with funds from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Kent Cultural Alliance.

Mainstay Hosts September 1 Tribute to Billy Penn Burger

August 17, 2023 by The Mainstay

Share

On Friday, September 1 at 8 PM, piano impresario Joe Holt, the host of The Mainstay’s popular monthly “First Friday” programs, once again welcomes some of the area’s top musicians in a tribute to the late Billy Penn Burger.

Just a year ago in September, those who attended our monthly “First Friday” program were treated to an exceptional evening of great music and reminiscence at the Mainstay. The binding stitch for this assembled-for-the-occasion 6-piece band was the music of Billy Penn Burger. He was a much-loved musician from the Wilmington area who passed away just a few years ago after an impressive career as a singer/ songwriter and local band leader.

The response to the reunion was powerful, and Joe has invited the same musical guests to join him in a revisited tribute to the much-loved Burger.

Two of the players – guitarist Nick Bucci and piano player Steve Prentice – were members of Burger’s band in its heyday. Also on stage will be Sharon Sable and Keli Vale sharing lead and back-up vocals. Ray Anthony will keep the band’s pulse on drums. Joe Holt, in addition to his melodic duties, also serves as the group’s bass player, nicely accomplished on his digital keyboard.

Last year’s event was full of familiar faces and many first-time visitors, some of them wearing Billy Penn Burger t-shirts. The Mainstay is pleased to reconvene these fine players in 2023 so that we can enjoy more of this man’s passionate music entrusted to these talented musicians.

Tickets are $20 in advance of the show and can be purchased online at mainstayrockhall.org. Phone reservations are accepted by calling (410) 639-9133 (tickets reserved by phone are $25 when paid at the door). The Mainstay is located at 5753 N Main Street in Rock Hall.

Barefoot Movement Bluegrass At The Mainstay

August 12, 2023 by The Mainstay

Share

At 8 pm Friday, August 25, the Mainstay, in partnership with the Hedgelawn Foundation, welcomes the joyful bluegrass sounds of the The Barefoot Movement.

Bluegrass fans are already familiar with The Barefoot Movement, the bluegrass and Americana band, based out of Nashville, Tennessee, whose four members perform on stage – well, barefoot!

The group weaves lush harmonies, thoughtful instrumentation, and memorable melodies into a repertoire that clearly identifies with the sounds of an Appalachian string band, but also pays homage to the influences of country, folk, and even a bit of rock. The group has enjoyed almost non-stop cross-country touring with appearances at the top bluegrass festivals in the United States as well as a tour in Africa at the invitation of the American Embassy. They are former finalists in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s New Band Competition, and more recently received a Momentum Award, naming them “Band of the Year” by the International Bluegrass Music Association.

The “Movement” can be traced back to the college music studies of singer-songwriter/ fiddler Noah Wall and mandolinist Tommy Norris. With the addition of versatile guitarist and singer Alex Conerly and Katie Blomarz on the upright bass, the Movement’s sound found its winning, joyous sound.

The band has been featured in Country Weekly Magazine, Rolling Stone, CMT Edge, Music City Roots, and Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour.

As Chuck Plotkin, music producer for Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen asserted, “I would travel a thousand miles to hear them again and I urge music lovers of all stripes to join me.”

This show is scheduled for the Mainstay’s outdoor covered stage area weather permitting.

Mainstay Gala To Celebrate Founding

August 8, 2023 by The Mainstay

Share

On Saturday, September 16, The Mainstay – Kent County’s non-profit live music performance/ event venue – invites its friends and neighbors to this year’s outdoor Gala Celebration in its backyard amphitheater space. The 2023 festive event has been nicknamed the “Founders’ Celebration” and serves as an opportunity to look back at the impressive history of this well-loved, volunteer supported organization.

In 1997 Tom McHugh, a retired college professor returned to the Eastern Shore with a vision and opened The Mainstay in a vacant showroom in the center of the small harbor town of Rock Hall. His efforts were ambitious, but determined — schedule a series of music shows featuring some of the country’s most impressive musical performers, and present them on a simple stage every week, year after year. The Mainstay has remained faithful to this legacy’s vision and continues to present a year-round weekly calendar of diverse concert events that still brings cheering audiences to their feet week after week (to date, the Mainstay has presented well over a thousand of these concerts).

This year’s Gala pays special homage to those people who early-on joined McHugh’s efforts as faithful volunteers and supporters. Some of these people still show up on a regular basis. Executive Director Matt Mielnick comments “What’s truly special is that some of those “founders” who are no longer with us are still celebrated at almost every show when the good old days are discussed, like they’re still in the room.” As another patron phrased it, “It’s not immortality, but it sure is a good down payment.”

The party starts at 6 p.m. There will be an open bar, a casual hors d’oeuvres buffet prepared by the Happy Chicken, live music with Buffalo Rose (one of the most popular groups to perform here in 2022), a silent auction, and perhaps a surprise or two.

Tickets are $100 and can be purchased on the Mainstay website (mainstayrockhall.org) by clicking on the “Shows” tab (located at the top of the Home page) and scrolling down to July 9, or by calling The Mainstay at (410) 639-9133.

Barbara Parker Performs on The Mainstay’s Outdoor Stage

July 4, 2023 by The Mainstay

Share

Barbara Parker

On Friday, July 21, The Mainstay in Rock Hall, Maryland welcomes one of its favorite local performers to its outdoor stage (weather permitting). Singer songwriter Barbara Parker, originally from Seattle and now a long-time resident of Kent County, has written songs, sung, and accompanied herself on guitar since she was a young girl. But for a number of years, she stepped back from music, deferring to her career in the advertising industry. An invitation to perform at a local Open Mic night about 10 years ago jumpstarted her return to performing. Since then, she has appeared solo and with musical backup at some of the Mid-Atlantic’s best-loved stages and listening rooms.

Parker’s original music comes from an understanding of her own and other’s emotions, and wistfulness for what lies beyond the horizon. Her stage presence summons memories of the grand folk dames of classic coffeehouses, and the giant female stars of old-time country such as Patsy Cline. But she is equally capable of assigning her signature voice to the iconic tunes of her favorite performers, including John Hyatt, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, and James Taylor. She will be accompanied on the program by Joe Holt on piano, Stu Gray on guitar, Sam Moore on percussion, and Elbert Hicks on bass guitar.

In addition to her music, she is also a highly regarded painter. Her work, typically embodying bold colors and patterns from the landscape of Chesapeake country, can be viewed in a number of local businesses frequently visited by the public.

Joe Holt Welcomes Vocalist Holly Lane

June 20, 2023 by The Mainstay

Share

Holly Lane

On Friday, July 7th, piano impresario Joe Holt, the host of the Mainstay’s popular monthly First Friday programs, welcomes singer Holly Lane to share the stage with him. Holly and Joe have prepared an evening of songs with a Parisian-theme, a strong connection with her personal history.

Holly Lane was 10 years old when she fell in love with France on a trip abroad with her mother. Several trips later, in her early 20’s, she began working as a dancer in a Paris cabaret. Not long thereafter, she happened upon an open mic at a jazz club and tried her hand at singing. She soon found herself working steadily as a vocalist in the city’s jazz clubs. After an exciting career in Paris she returned to her home in Rehoboth, Delaware in 2001 and became the vocalist for the group “Shore Jazz”, and worked at the local clubs 4-5 nights/week. In recent years, she has taken a weekly residency on Thursday nights at Café Azafran, in Rehoboth. These days, you need to make a reservation weeks in advance if you want to see her. Rounding out Joe’s guest list for the evening will be Shore Jazz members John Ewart and Mike McShane.

The 3D Jazz Trio Return to the Mainstay

May 31, 2023 by The Mainstay

Share

On Saturday, June 17th at 8 pm, the Mainstay in Rock Hall, MD is excited to welcome the return of one of its most requested acts, the 3D Jazz Trio. The trio features Amy Shook on upright bass, Sherrie Maricle on drums, and Jackie Warren on keyboard. The three performers met in May of 2014 while playing in the internationally acclaimed 15-piece, all-women DIVA Jazz Orchestra. From their first shared downbeat, they became kindred-swinging spirits and the resulting musical synergy was fast and fierce…or as the New York Times put it…”blistering hot!”

Fiercely swinging, this powerhouse trio plays original, traditional, and contemporary standards from many different genres of music. Their distinctive style and innovative arrangements are super-charged by their boundless musical joy, gratitude, and enthusiasm.

Since its inception, 3D has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals, including: The Blue Note (NYC) Dizzy’s Club (NYC), Mezzrow (NYC), Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors (NYC), Blues Alley (D.C.), and at the Festival Internacional de Música La Guarapachanga in Cuba.

3D Jazz Trio

From her drum set, Sherrie Maricle also leads The DIVA Jazz Orchestra, and her jazz quintet FIVE PLAY. She is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions, including The Kennedy Center Alliance Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Arts, a Doctoral Fellowship from New York University, the New York City Music Educator’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Education and was twice selected New York University “Music Teacher of the Year.”

Amy Shook has performed numerous times at the Mainstay at the invitation of various jazz headliners. She has appeared on stage with an incredible roster of jazz icons including Lionel Hampton, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the Scott Silbert Big Band, Hubert Laws, and Kurt Elling to name a few. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, Dizzy’s Club the Blue Note NY, Washington Women in Jazz Festival, and at the White House twice by special invitation. In addition to her work as a performing and recording artist, and a multi-instrumentalist (acoustic bass, electric bass, violin, viola, and cello), Amy is also an accomplished composer.

Pianist Jackie Warren performs regularly as a soloist, but also has another jazz trio, with bassist Peter Dominguez and drummer Ron Godale.  She also arranges and plays salsa and Latin jazz with percussionist Sammy Deleon y suorquestra.  In addition to these groups, Jackie has performed locally and nationally with such artists and groups as David Fathead Newman, Clark Terry, the Spirits of Havana, Jimmy Heath, Tito Puente, Jr., Percy Sledge, and the Jazz Heritage Orchestra.

All three women are experienced and enthusiastic educators. They’ve presented workshops and clinics at numerous universities, colleges, and high schools throughout the country. Ever since the summer of 2019, they’ve served as virtual and in-person artists-in-residence for the Maryland Summer Jazz event in Rockville, MD.

Baltimore-Based Honey Dewdrops at the Mainstay

May 24, 2023 by The Mainstay

Share

On Friday, June 9 at 8 pm, The Mainstay is pleased to present the seamless acoustic music of the Honey Dewdrops.

The husband and wife Americana team The Honey Dewdrops – Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish– have long felt the push-and-pull between their original roots in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia and their current home in urban Baltimore. Soon after relocating to Maryland in 2009, they became enmeshed in Baltimore’s thriving string-band music scene, and found it to be “one of the most open and enthusiastic creative communities” they’d come across. Seven albums and fourteen years of touring domestically and internationally later, Laura and Kagey continue to expand their contemporary folk sound, using their beautiful playing and harmonies, and other musician contacts to emphasize what connects with their audiences.

The Honey Dewdrops

With a background in American string-band music and a close-harmony style reminiscent of Appalachian mountain singing, Wortman and Parrish bring a familiar yet unique sound to listeners with clawhammer banjo, mandolin, acoustic and electric guitars. Their partnership has long focused on writing original songs and adding new ideas to the repertoire. Their live show at the Mainstay also features Baltimore multi-instrumentalist Alex Lacquement on upright bass, and percussionist, EJ Shaull-Thompson.
