The League of Women Voters of Kent County Maryland has recently published a revised brochure “Run for Office in Kent County 2021.” The information contained in this guide includes most offices for which legal residents of Kent County may run, the duties of the office, how the elections are conducted, the office term, and the base salary for the position. The League encourages all who are qualified to consider running for office.

The brochures have been distributed to Kent CountyBoard of Elections, political clubs and central committees, local municipal offices, and the Kent County Commissioner’s office.  It is available online at the League of Women Voters of Kent County Website at kent-lwvmaryland.nationbuilder.com.

The League of Women Voters of Kent County Meeting

The League of  Women Voters of Kent County will conclude its yearlong celebration of the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, and the 100th birthday of the founding of the League of Women Voters, by hosting a lecture, “Parades, Presidents, and Protests: Suffragists and the White House.”

On October 26 at 4:00 p.m. the League will present this lecture by Colleen Shogan on Zoom.  Dr. Shogan is the Senior Vice President of the White House Historical Association and the Director of the David Rubenstein Center for White House History.  She is also the Vice Chair of the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission.  Dr. Shogan received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University and has published essays, books and scholarly articles on presidential leadership, women in politics and Congress.

LWV to Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Adoption of the 19th Amendment

The League of Women Voters of Kent County will celebrate Women’s Equality Day with a ride on the Chester River Packet.Women’s Equality Day, August 26, marks the day in 1920 that the 19th Amendment was certified as part of the U.S. Constitution winning women the right to vote. League members will dress in white period suffragist costumes and wave to onlookers.  The Chester River Packet, which was built in the style of a 1920 era cruising boat, will be draped in banners celebrating 100 years of women’s suffrage and will cruise the Chester River from 6-8 on August 26.  The packet will be visible from riverside locations such as Wilmer Park and local restaurants.

The League of Women Voters of Kent County: Voters’ Guide

The League of Women Voters of Kent County has published a Voters’ Guide for the upcoming primary election on June 2. Printed copies of the Voters’ Guide will be available at Kent County supermarkets and other open retailers. The online Voters’ Guide is available at www.vote411.org.

Each candidate for office was given the opportunity to provide information about themselves and to respond to questions from the League. Candidate information and responses are presented unedited. Online, voters can enter their zip code and view all the races on their ballot; responses from two candidates can be viewed together allowing comparisons between candidates. Vote411.org also provides links to other important websites such as the Maryland State Board of Elections.

The Voters’ Guide is also available on the League of Women Voters of Kent County’s website at https://kent-lwvmaryland.nationbuilder.com/voters guide. 100th Birthday Celebration of the League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Kent County and Sumner Hall will sponsor a celebration of the centennial of U.S. women’s suffrage and the 100th birthday of the founding of the League of Women Voters.  The party will be held at Sumner Hall, 206 Queen St., Chestertown, on Saturday, February 15 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  A light lunch will be followed by the keynote speaker, Sherwin Markman, whose topic is: “The U.S. Electoral College.”  Mr. Markman was an assistant to President Lyndon Johnson during a time when immense progress was made on voting rights and civil rights.

A birthday cake and beverages will be shared following the presentation, after toasts to the League and to women’s suffrage.

The celebration is open and free to the public, but seating is limited, so please register to attend by going to Sumner Hall/ Eventbrite.  This celebration is the second in a series of events planned by the Kent County League to celebrate the League of Women Voters and the passage of the 19th amendment.  For more information visit the Facebook page of the League of Women Voters of Kent County, Maryland or call 410-639-7811.

League of Women Voters of Kent County Upcoming Events

The League of Women Voters of Kent County will kick off its year-long celebration of both the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment and the 100th birthday of the League of Women Voters with a showing of the film Iron Jawed Angels (R) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29th at Litrenta Hall (Toll Science Building) at Washington College. Cosponsors of the event are the college’s departments of Sociology/Gender Studies, History, Communication and Media Studies, and Political Science.

The movie depicts the struggles of the Women’s Movement in the early years of the 20th century and the effort and sacrifice of suffragists to pass the 19th amendment.  A panel discussion featuring representatives of the college and the League will follow the film. The public is welcomed to this event which is free of charge.

The League has additional events planned, including: a birthday party on Feb. 15th cosponsored with Sumner Hall; a field trip to exhibits in the Library of Congress and the National Archives; voter registration opportunities; lectures and displays cosponsored with the Historical Society of Kent County; and costumed participation in 4th of July and Legacy Day parades. Also, the keynote speaker for the League’s Annual meeting on April 16, will be Dr. Colleen Shogan, Deputy Director (and National Women’s Centennial Committee Designee) of the U.S. Library of Congress.

National Voter Registration Day Is September 24

The League of Women Voters of Kent County encourages those citizens who are not yet registered to vote to do so, especially to mark National Voter Registration Day, which is Tuesday, September 24. National Voter Registration Day, the fourth Tuesday of every September, was created and promoted with a view to increasing citizen participation in local and state elections across the country. “Off-year” elections are a chance for voters to elect men and women who will have immediate impacts on their daily lives.  In Kent County, Maryland  an election will be held on Nov 5, 2019 to choose a town council member for both the second and fourth wards. 2020 will bring the Presidential election, the US House of Representatives election, and many other important races.

Candidate Forum for Rock Hall April 28

On Sunday April 28 candidates for mayor and town council of Rock Hall will participate in a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Kent County and the Greater Rock Hall Business Association. It will be held at the Rock Hall Fire House in the Chesapeake Room.  The forum for Council candidates will begin at 2:00 and the forum for candidates for Mayor will begin at 3:15.

Lt. Gen.  Stephen B. Croker  USAF (ret.) will moderate the forums. Candidates will have an opportunity to introduce themselves and answer questions they have received in advance from the League of Women Voters.  Audience members may submit questions to be answered by the candidates, and each candidate will also present closing remarks.

“How Maryland Secures Its Elections Systems” Presented by LWV of Kent County

“How Maryland Secures Its Elections Systems” will be the presentation topic at the Annual Meeting of the League of Women Voters of Kent County, with Nikki Charlson, Deputy Administrator, Maryland State Board of Elections as the featured speaker.  The meeting will take place at Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Parish Hall) 101 N. Cross Street, Chestertown on Thursday April 25, 2019 and is free and open to the public.  A luncheon will be provided for $30 per person and will begin at 11:30 a.m. The presentation will begin at 12:30 p.m.  Please RSVP by April 17 at [email protected] or 703-966-7660 to reserve a seat for the luncheon and presentation, or presentation only and tell us how many are in your party. The cost of the luncheon may be paid at the door.

League of Women Voters Upcoming Presentation March 20

The League of Women Voters of Kent County and the William James Forum of Washington College will present a talk by Dr. Robert Lynch on “The Economic Effects of Granting Legal Status and Citizenship to the Eleven Million Undocumented Immigrants in the U.S.”  The event is free and open to the public and will take place at 7:00 p.m., March 20 at Litrenta Hall in the Toll Science Building at Washington College. Light refreshments will be served.

Dr Lynch is a Professor of Economics at Washington College.  He has published works in the area of the economic effects of immigration reform, the economic and social consequences of public investment in early childhood, the adequacy and effectiveness of state and local government economic policies in promoting growth and creating jobs, the efficiency, fairness and stability of state and local tax systems and the definition and measurement of income inequality.  Dr. Lynch has served as a Visiting Fellow at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, Senior Fellow the the Center of American Progress and Research Associate with the Economic Policy Institute.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization dedicated to promoting informed and active participation in government.  The William James Forum seeks to promote thought and discussion on a wide variety of issues such as civil rights, minority issues, technological revolution, and environmental and political movements.
