Chestertown RiverArts and The Garfield Center Team Up to Produce “talkHAMILTON

July 21, 2020 by Chestertown RiverArts

Share

In 2015, “Hamilton: An American Musical” opened on Broadway and splashed into the pop culture with a dazzling fervor unparalleled in recent decades. The show, like its namesake, grew its reputation as a force to be reckoned with in American social, cultural, and even political arenas. But with the show’s arrival on streaming media, in the form of its recent release on Disney+, it suddenly found an even greater population of appreciative fans.

What does it mean for a piece of entertainment drawing on influences from Gangsta Rap to Gilbert and Sullivan, and a work of biographical historiography to have united such a diverse array of the fractured American public? How did disparate influences, paired with other real world conditions, converge to allow the show to have such a tremendous impact on American society, culture, and even public policy? And how has that changed from 2015 to 2020, and in the move from the Broadway stage to one of the biggest streaming platforms there is?

To discuss these fascinating questions, Chestertown RiverArts and the Garfield Center for the Arts are pleased and excited to announce a very special partnership in conjunction with GCTV. “talkHAMILTON: a Discussion on historical, racial and theatrical context to the hit Broadway musical” is the next Live GCTV presentation for Wednesday, July 22 at 7:30 PM. It can be found online on the Garfield’s Facebook page at facebook.com/garfieldcenterforthearts.

The panel assembled for the presentation are Chestertown RiverArts Executive Director Maria Wood, the GCA’s Executive Director Steven Arnold, Kent County Public Library’s Youth Services Librarian Natalie Lane and Chestertown RiverArts ArtsAlive! Director Ann Farley. The program will also feature performance content related to “Hamilton.”

The Facebook Live format allows viewers to participate via the comment box, so live viewers will be able to share their thoughts and ask questions. In addition, the two organizations are asking for questions and comments in advance so they can be worked into the conversation. Please email those questions to [email protected].

Maria Wood is the Executive Director of Chestertown RiverArts. She grew up in Queen Anne’s County and returned to the Eastern Shore in 2018 after receiving a BA from Smith College in American Studies and Ethnomusicology as a (ahem) mature student. She began her academic work on “Hamilton: An American Musical” in 2015, pursued research on the unfolding “Hamilton” phenomenon as Student Fellow with the Kahn Liberal Arts Institute in 2016 and 2017, and completed an Honors Thesis titled “No John Trumbull: Social, Cultural, and Political Resonances of ‘Hamilton: An American Musical.’ ” She has taught classes on “Hamilton” for WC-ALL since 2018. Leading last February’s “Hamiltunes” at the Mainstay was one of her final pre-pandemic group experiences, so things could be worse. She continues to think about, write about, and analyze the continually expanding “Hamilton” universe, much to the boredom of her friends and family.

Steven Arnold recently returned to the Eastern Shore in January when he joined The Garfield Center for the Arts as its Executive Director. His second time living and working as an Arts professional in the area, he left in 2011 to pursue other theatre jobs in Kentucky and Ohio. He received his BA in Theatre from The Ohio State University and is an experienced professional Actor, Director, Administrator and produced Playwright. His adaptation of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” for which he wrote the Book, Lyrics, Music and Orchestrations, premiered at The Mansfield Playhouse in 1999, and area audiences may remember his 10-minute plays, including last year’s “Power Nap,” from the GCA’s Short Attention Span Theatre over the years.

Natalie Lane has been the Youth Services Librarian for the Kent County Public Library System for eight years and has a great love for children’s literature. She is an avid supporter of the Arts and local theatre and has appeared in various stage productions in the community, most recently in GCA’s production of “Annie.” She first saw “Hamilton” on stage two years ago and has been a fan ever since, engaging with various productions, talks, and peripheral content about the show and its historical context. In her spare time, she enjoys nature, hiking, and cooking creative meals at home.

Ann Farley is the Director of Chestertown RiverArts ArtsAlive! She is a business consultant, educator and environmental advocate, as well as a non-profit leader and an artist. Recently, Ann was a past Executive Director of the Tilghman Area Youth Association, and was on the board of the Talbot County Arts Council. She holds a BS in biology from Duke University, and an MBA from Florida State University. She believes in the transformative power of arts experiences, and is a strong advocate for diversity and sustainability.

Chestertown RiverArts is a vibrant community arts center whose mission is “Growing community, creativity, and connection through the arts.” The Garfield Center for the Arts at the Prince Theatre’s mission is “To invigorate the cultural life of our community by nurturing, celebrating and supporting arts and artists through performance and education.”

RiverArts KidSPOT Makes Summer Announcement

May 30, 2020 by Chestertown RiverArts

Share

After thoughtful evaluation, RiverArts and KidSPOT are sad to announce yet another difficult decision in the cascade of difficult decisions this season. It is sad but likely no longer surprising to hear of the cancellation of KidSPOT’s Summer Arts Camps this year in view of the risks posed by the COVID 19 pandemic.

Instructors’ and students’ health remains of primary concern to RiverArts. There is clear consensus among medical professionals and public health experts that the dangers posed by the virus remain serious and ubiquitous. Looking at guidelines established by state and local authorities, RiverArts is facing the reality that no plausible way can be found to offer Summer Camp while providing sufficient protection to instructors, volunteers, and campers—and by extension to the families of everyone involved in the program.

Although camps are cancelled, KidSPOT will still be present to help kids and families “Play, create, explore” this summer. Plans are in the works for providing arts experiences for kids this summer, and further announcements about these plans will come as they take shape. KidSPOT Coordinator Sarah Lyle, Summer Camp Coordinators Elizabeth Healy and Mary Ann Herron, and RiverArts Executive Director Maria Wood all convey their hope that families will stay in touch via email and social media to say hello and share projects, creative creations, and ideas about how they’d like to connect with KidSPOT during coming weeks and months.

RiverArts galleries and main office are at 315 High Street, Suite 106, Chestertown, MD  21620 – (in the breezeway). In-person events and activities are suspended for the time being but the public is invited to visit www.ChestertownRiverArts.org to sign up for daily arts-related emails and to engage with the RiverArts community on Facebook and Instagram.

With the health of the community in mind, Chestertown RiverArts announces the cancellation of the face-to-face Reclaimed Runway event, and a shift to an alternative online event as part of the effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus so that fewer people are sick at any one time, and everyone can be treated properly.

“Social distancing” doesn’t have to mean “social isolation”

RiverArts has determined, “We won’t shut our community down—we’ll find out-of-the-box ways to come together safely.” Plans are in progress for a lively, engaging, and innovative event bringing  people together to have fun and support RiverArts. More details will be forthcoming about:

February 13, 2020 by Chestertown RiverArts

Share

Each April, Chestertown RiverArts celebrates our community’s long history of living close to the Earth by hosting an Earth-themed exhibit. Artists and poets are invited to submit works that reflect their concept of our beautiful Earth and what is happening to it. This year’s theme is “Taking Care: Celebrating the Earth.

Earth Day will celebrate its 50th anniversary on April 22. The global mission of Earth Day Network is “to diversify, educate, and activate the environmental movement worldwide.” It is their belief that one of the best ways to highlight this mission is through the creative arts. If you visit their website, www.earthdaynetwork.org you will learn about the issues and activities that they are pursuing. Perhaps this will inform and inspire both artwork and poetry.

You don’t have to be a fashion expert to submit a fun, creative design for the RiverArts gala, the Reclaimed Runway, happening Saturday, March 21, 2020, at the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company. All you need are imagination and the skills to work with recycled and/or repurposed items. Last year, materials included such items as mylar, vines, hair, used sails, laminate flooring scraps, nespresso coffee capsules, and even a metal corner of a box spring.

Consider how proud you or your team will be to see your models strut your designs down a runway to the delight of family, neighbors, friends, and co-workers. Your design may even win the judges’ Best in Show award, which comes with a cash prize, or the People’s Choice Award, which comes with bragging rights.

Designs will be juried to assure a variety of themes, designs, and participants. Submission deadline is February 17 and designers are encouraged to submit more than one design. For guidelines and more details including other key dates, visit www.ChestertownRiverArts.org/events and click on Reclaimed Runway. Call (410) 778-6300 or email [email protected] with any additional questions.

Big News for the 2020 RiverArts Film Society Season

December 5, 2019 by Chestertown RiverArts

Share

Starting January 2020, all RiverArts Film Society screenings will be held at the CHESAPEAKE 5 MOVIES located on Washington Street, Chestertown. This gives us up to 71 comfortable seats for each film event, classic movie concessions will be available, and a beautiful big screen for all our films.

Along with this change, we are changing our membership price structure. 2020 Film Society memberships will be $40 for an individual membership and $70 for duo memberships (when bought together). Film Society members have access to all 12 screenings in 2020—A great bargain!

Each member will receive a Film Pass Card to show at the door of each event to gain admittance. No more signing in! No more pre-registration! Non-members will still be welcome for a one-day membership cost of $10 per film. And, for a limited time, new and renewing members will receive free passes to any movie on the Chesapeake 5 roster.

Click here to join and get your Film Pass Card today!

Plans for the 2020 season are taking shape: Screenings will be on the 3rd Sunday of each month, from 4 – 6pm (not 4:30!). Details of films and curators are still being nailed down, but we know our kickoff curator will be the new Assistant Director of the Starr Center for the American Experience, JaJuan Johnson. Other community curators will include Tom Martin of The Bookplate. Robert Earl Price and Alicia Kozma are choosing two lesser-known fllms to curate, and we will once again screen two homegrown films during the year.

See you at the movies!
