KidSPOT Art Kits

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since we were together in the KidSPOT studio.

Our wonderful Saturday coordinator, Sarah Lyle, and the dedicated members of our KidSPOT Advisory Board miss you! Throughout this year we have worked in person and virtually to provide creative and COVID safe art opportunities for our youngest artists to share with their families.

After a thorough evaluation of COVID safety protocols and the needs of area children, this summer we have decided to focus on bringing art experiences to children in Chestertown and other Kent County locations. We will continue our COVID community support with free KidSPOTArt Bag distributions, collaborations with community partners, and COVID safe activities at community events.

Look for KidSPOT at these events, with more to come this summer:

Saturday, April 17 and 24: The chemistry honor society Gamma Eta at Washington College is partnering with KidSPOT to donate slime kits for kids ages 5+ at the Chestertown Farmers’ Market!

Saturday, June 5: “Paint the Park” for kids, a part of the RiverArts Paint the Town Plus Plein Air festival.

Saturday, June 19:COVID safe collaborative art at Fountain Park for Chestertown’s Juneteenth Celebration.

Please check in with KidSPOTon Facebook and Instagram, and subscribe to the Daily Dose newsletter to find out more about where to find us and play, create, explore together.

RiverArts: Keeping Our Community Connected

March 29, 2021 by Chestertown RiverArts

Share

“The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.” So said Molière. In that spirit RiverArts has sought to come up with creative ways to overcome the limitations created by the pandemic. It continues to explore new ways to bring people together virtually and, in so doing, act as a force to help keep our community inter-connected and thriving.

New Contention, 2020. Oil on copper. Kyle Hackett

Early on, RiverArts began offering its now popular Salon Discussions. These get-togethers promote connection and stimulate thought by inviting speakers of note to present programs on a broad range of topics from art of all kinds to climate change to life-long learning to the African American experience here in Kent County. Questions and conversation are encouraged. Tuesdays, 5-5:45pm.

More recently, RiverArts began offering monthly Artists’ Roundtables. Hosted by Gallery Director, Sue Wilson, these zoom conversations offer peer-to-peer support and a place for local artists to share ideas and experiences. A broad range of topics are explored such as “How should I frame my piece?” or “How should I price and sell work navigating the new normal?”

Wednesdays, 6-7pm.

The RiverArts Photography Club meets on Thursdays at 7pm. Participants of all experience levels are encouraged to share their work and provide each other with helpful feedback. To sign up email Steve Kane at [email protected].

Classes for youth and adults are offered virtually and occasionally in person outdoors, providing instruction on basic techniques in a broad range of media, and for all levels of skill and experience. Student comments after a recent Exploring Watercolor class taught by nationally renowned landscape painter Deena Ball included the rave review, “I’ve been taking classes for over 20 years and by far, this was the best class I have ever taken.”

The newest addition to these offerings are Flash Exhibits, online shows offering an opportunity for artists of all ages to share their work with the community in the context of the rapid change and unpredictability in which we are living. Announced no more than a week before opening, Flash Exhibits showcase the work of the talented artists in our community in a format of exploration and spontaneity. Artists are encouraged to invite audiences into the process of art-making at any stage along the journey from the initial inspiration to the finished work.

April Schedule (more events being added weekly):

SALON: Exploring Race, Class, and Social Standing Through Painting with Kyle Hackett

Sam Nester

April 6, 5pm

Kyle will discuss how his paintings explore issues of race, class, and social standing through approaches to self-representation and the constructed image.

SALON: Plants, Music, Light and Art with Sam Nester

April 13, 5pm

Sam Nester’s Arcadia sound and light installation takes the natural biorhythms of Virginian native plants and converts them to MIDI data to control MIDI instruments and a corresponding synesthetic light installation in real-time.

CLASS: How to Enter Online Exhibits 101 with Kris Kelley, via Zoom

Welcome to RiverArts Virtual Flash Exhibit

March 12, 2021 by Chestertown RiverArts

Share

Body of Water by Lisa Scarbath

If you’re wondering what local artists have been working on these many months, then welcome to RiverArts’ virtual Flash Exhibit running from March 8 –  26, at the Chestertown RiverArts website, https://community.chestertownriverarts.org/exhibit/imperfection-two. As with any in-person show, you will be able to see a broad range of work and have the opportunity to get up close to study those pieces that particularly grab your interest, presented in two online viewing rooms.

The theme of this exhibit, “Imperfection,” puts an emphasis on the journey, not the destination. Accordingly, the viewer will gain insight into the creative process, the stumbles, and new directions along the way. You may get to see unfinished, evolving works, which speak for themselves. In some cases, artists have provided commentary about their approaches.

The response to the call for entries was extraordinary. The range of media is broad. Two dimensional works include paintings, prints, collage, photography, and cut paper. Other media include fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, glass, turned wood, mosaic and jewelry. Subject matter is also wide ranging including botanicals, still lifes, land and seascapes, life drawing, and nautica, as well as political commentary. Styles run the gamut from realistic to impressionistic to abstract to just plain whimsy.

As you move through the exhibit, take the opportunity to click on the + sign under each piece any number of times to zoom in to study the intriguing details. Just click on the arrows to move back and forth. It’s so easy to navigate, you’ll feel the joy of walking through RiverArts galleries from home.

Chestertown RiverArts’ mission is “growing community, creativity, and connection through the Arts.” Visit online at www.ChestertownRiverArts.org, or connect by phone at 410.778.6300 or email at [email protected].

Watercolor, Deena Ball

Learn something new & have fun in 2021! Chestertown RiverArts offers a full slate of covid-safe programs for the winter and spring months, with new art practices, exciting guest speakers, and more. Visit the website at community.ChestertownRiverArts.org, subscribe to the Daily Dose email newsletter, and follow on social media for updates on the offerings below and more!

A RiverArts Salon is a place for lively, physically distant but socially connected conversation that goes a little bit deeper than small talk. Salons grow community connections and increased understanding every Tuesday from 5 to 5:45pm. RiverArts Salons have become increasingly popular, with guests including local luminaries from Washington College and the Eastern Shore arts community as well as global artists and scholars from Boston University, The Museum of Natural History in New York, and Hochschule für Musik Detmold, in Detmold, Germany and more.

On Tuesday, January 26, Buck Duncan, President of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation talks about the Dock Street Foundation’s Hopeful 2021 campaign and what citizens of the Shore can do to be hopeful, give back, and engage during these times. University of Auckland health researcher Paul Ware brings a perspective from another hemisphere on February 2 to lead a conversation about cultural differences between the global East and West, focusing on New Zealand and Taiwan.

Salons will continue on Tuesdays throughout the spring. Guests will include Salvadoran musician, painter, and ceramicist Fredy Granillo, theoretical astrophysicist Eve Armstrong, Jan Elvin and David White of WC-ALL, and author and founder of Black Minimalists Yolanda Acree, among others. Drawing by Vanna Ramirez

Do you ever wish you had a personal consultant to help you frame your work? Have questions about pricing, selling, or how to navigate the “new normal” as a working artist? New monthly Artists’ Roundtable discussions offer peer-to-peer support and a place for local artists to share ideas and experience on essential topics. Hosted by RiverArts Gallery Director Sue Wilson, the series will begin on Wednesday, January 27 at 6pmwith “Framing your Work to Exhibit.”Presenting your work professionally is a crucial part of success as an artist. From picking the right mat or frame to design, money and time saving tips and tricks, and simple how-tos, Sue will draw from her over 25 years of experience to answer your questions.

February will also bring engaging classes and opportunities to learn something new. Through a combination of Zoom sessions and detailed homework lessons, painter Deena Ball presents an in-depth exploration of watercolor painting on the first three Wednesdays in February. Later in the month, local multi-hyphenate artist Vanna Ramirez offers a one-hour drawing primer, So You Think You’d Like to Draw. And we’re excited to offer two fun free classes that support hands-on creativity at home with the camaraderie of others in our community — a “yarnstorming” session with guidance & tips on making items to contribute to Adkins Arboretum’s March event, and a TGIF-style paint night to complete a “paint at home” kit together. Kits will be available on the RiverArts website.

Register for these and other classes at community.chestertownriverarts.org/programs/category/Class. RiverArts is committed to accessible programming and to compensating artists and instructors fairly and offers virtual classes on a pay what you can basis. Those with limited funds are welcome to enjoy full access to the class for a donation of any size. Those who are able are invited to pay more, to support accessible art experiences for all.

The community is the reason RiverArts exists. Executive Director Maria Wood writes, “We are pleased to serve both our founding members and those who are just discovering RiverArts. We believe Art in all its forms is essential for expressing our responses to the good and bad we find in the world, and for building bridges from where we are to where we need to be.” RiverArts is committed to action, and loves working together with community members and their considerable talents, experiences, and ideas to build the kind of world we want to see, to make everyone’s lives more creative, colorful, and connected.

RiverArts Holiday Show and Sale

Every year one of RiverArts’ most popular shows is the Holiday Show and Sale. Through December 22 this year, shopping for that special gift for a family member, a friend or maybe even yourself will be as enjoyable as ever, but even more accessible.

Twenty nine fine artists and crafters have worked in a range of media including paintings and prints, jewelry, ceramics, fiber, furniture and other wood items, as well as hand-forged pieces. Each piece is original and unique, and many items are under $100. In addition to seasonal items such as holiday cards and wreaths, they run the gamut from nautical to botanical, from classical to whimsical, from practical to festive, some decorative and some wearable.

As always you can see beautiful displays in the windows of the RiverArts Galleries where items are fully lit and can be seen from the shelter of the breezeway any time of the day. Displays will be rotated regularly to show all artwork to advantage.
