Brown Delivers Career-High 20 Points To Lead Shoremen Over McDaniel, 67-51

Junior forward Daniel Brown (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) scored 13 of his career and game-high 20 points in the second half to help lead the host Washington College men’s basketball team to a 67-51 victory against the McDaniel Green Terror, in a Centennial Conference contest on Wednesday evening at Cain Athletic Center. The victory was the first for the Shoremen of the new decade.

How It Happened
– McDaniel jumped out to 9-2 advantage at the 17:36 mark but the Shoremen tightened up defensively and answered with an 11-4 run to even the contest at 13-all after a left wing trey by Alec Lewis midway through the opening stanza.
– Washington took their first lead of the contest at 16-15 on another triple by Lewis from the right wing with 8:50 left, giving the hosts the lead for good. Nick Romeo then followed up a miss in transition to cap a 5-2 mini spurt that extended the lead to 18-15 with 8:25 left.
– The hosts took their biggest lead of the half at 29-17 after Tray Wright went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with 1:29 on the clock, capping a 9-0 burst for the Shoremen.  Brown scored five points on a pair of layups and Dallas Marshall added a 3-pointer to account for the scoring during the key stretch for the Shoremen.
– Sophomore forward Quinn Kimmick hit a trifecta with 1:10 left to bring the Green Terror within 29-20 at the break.
– The Shoremen held the visitors to 27.6 percent shooting in the stanza as McDaniel converted just 8-of-29 attempts, including 1-of-9 from behind the arc.
– Austin Allen staked Washington to a 35-24 advantage after completing a drive down the lane with 17:19 remaining in the contest, however, the visitors went on a 7-1 run to trim the deficit to 36-31 after freshman forward Che Colbert connected on a pair of free throws at the 14:16 mark.
– Washington responded with back-to-back buckets to push the lead to 40-31 at the 12:07 mark as Allen swished a short jumper and Wright converted a layup in transition.
– McDaniel inched within five, 45-40, after senior forward Sam Beverly hit a pair from the line with 9:39 left but Brown scored five consecutive points to restore a double-digit lead at 50-40 for the Shoremen.
– The visitors would get as close as 50-44 after Beverly converted in the paint with eight minutes left.  Brown answered with a turnaround jumper and Lewis followed with a 3-pointer from the left wing to widen the lead to 55-44 at the 7:02 mark.  Marshall scored four straight points for the Shoremen as he went 4-of-6 from the line to give the hosts a comfortable 61-49 lead with 2:22 remaining.
-The Shoremen eventually took their largest lead of the night at 67-49 on a layup by Wright with just ten ticks left.

For the Shoremen (4-10 Overall, 2-5 Centennial Conference)
– Brown (20 points, seven rebounds), Marshall (12 points, team-high nine rebounds, 7-for-10 from foul line), Allen (eight caroms)
– The hosts shot 41.5% (22-of-53) from the floor, 35.0 percent (7-for-20) from long-distance and 69.6% (16-for-23) at the free throw line.
– Washington controlled the paint as they out rebounded the Green Terror by a 42-30 margin, including a 12-7 margin on the offensive glass.
– The bench for the Shoremen outscored McDaniel’s reserves by an 18-9 count.
– The Shoremen converted 77.8 percent (14-of-18) of their attempts from the line in the final half.

For McDaniel (4-10 Overall, 0-7 Centennial Conference)
– Mike Wallace (18 points, 7-of-11 from the floor), Josh Sproul (16 points, 7-of-15 field goal attempts), Beverly (team-high seven boards)
– The Green Terror shot 34.0% (18-of-53) from the floor in the loss, 13.3% (2-of-15) from three point range, and 68.4% (13-of-19) at the free throw line.

Notes
– Brown was named the Goose Nation TV Shoremen Player of the Game.

Cassidy Quattro – Shorewoman of the Week

Senior women’s basketball player Cassidy Quattro (Lansdale, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) is this week’s Shorewoman of the Week.

Quattro pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds against #24 Widener on Tuesday at the HoopMIA D3 Shootout in Miami, Fla. On Monday at the shootout against 2019 NCAA Tournament team Eastern Connecticut State, she led all players with three blocks while scoring a team-best seven points to go along with five rebounds.

This is Quattro’s third career Shorewoman of the Week honor.

Tray Wright – Shoreman of the Week

Sophomore men’s basketball player Tray Wright (Baltimore, Md./Saint Paul’s School for Boys) is this week’s Shoreman of the Week. Wright chalked up a career-high and game-best five steals and scored a team-high 15 points at Ursinus on Wednesday.

This is Wright’s third career Shoreman of the Week honor.

Wright Scores 15; Three Players Hit Double Digits In Scoring

Host Ursinus shot 52.5% from the floor and had all five starters score 13 or more points en route to an 84-73 win over visiting Washington College in a Centennial Conference men’s basketball game played today at D.L. Helfferich Hall in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.

How It Happened
– Ursinus jumped out to a 9-2 lead just 3:53 into the game following a three pointer from Jimmy Kpadeh.
– The Shoremen scored the next seven points to tie the game at 9-9 with 14:57 to go in the opening half following a layup from Alec Lewis.
– The Bears scored the next seven points to take the lead for good and take a 16-9 lead with 12:32 left in the half on a pair of free throws from Lucas Olshevski. A three pointer from Matt McMahon started the run and gave the Bears the lead for good.
– A three from Lewis cut the lead to 20-15 with 11:10 left in the half, but Ursinus went on an 8-0 run to take their first double digit lead at 28-15 with 7:45 left until the halftime break following a three pointer from Ryan McTamney.
– Washington got a three pointer from Dilyn Becker with four seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 43-31 at the halftime break.
– A layup from George Gordon with 17:57 left in the game gave the Bears their first 20 point lead at 53-33.
– The Shoremen would use a 23-11 run over the next 8:09 to cut the lead back to single digits at 64-56 following a layup from Becker with 9:48 to play.
– Ursinus would then put the game away by going on a 13-0 run to extend the lead to 77-56 with 6:48 to play on a jumper from Trey Koehler.
– The Bears led 84-65 with 2:42 to go before Washington would finish the game on an 8-0 run, as a traditional three point play from Chris Weaver with 42 seconds to play set the score at 84-73 and capped the scoring.

For the Shoremen (3-7 Overall, 1-3 Centennial Conference)
– Tray Wright (15 points, career high five steals), Dallas Marshall (11 points, team high four assists, two steals), Austin Allen (10 points, five rebounds, two steals), Lewis (nine points, two steals), Daniel Brown (team high six rebounds).
– The Shoremen shot 44.4% (28-for-63) from the floor in the loss, 25.9% (7-for-27) from three point range, and just 40% (10-for-25) at the free throw line.
– Washington forced 18 turnovers, while turning the ball over 11 times themselves, held a 36-30 advantage in points in the paint, and held a 22-10 advantage in bench points.

For Ursinus (6-3 Overall, 2-2 Centennial Conference)
– McTamney (16 points, eight rebounds), Bruce Edwards (16 points, six rebounds), Gordon (14 points, 10 rebounds), Ryan Hughes (15 points, six rebounds), Kpadeh (13 points, six rebounds, game high nine assists).
– The Bears shot 52.5% (31-for-59) from the floor in the win, 44.4% (12-for-27) from three point range, and 62.5% (10-for-16) at the free throw line.
– Ursinus held a sizable 46-31 advantage in rebounding in the win.

Notes
– This is the third game this season in which Allen has hit double digits in scoring, matching his total number of double digit scoring games from a season ago.
– Wright’s previous career high in steals was four, which he did twice, most recently earlier this year against Penn State-Harrisburg.
– This was the final Washington College athletics contest of the 2019 calendar year.

Shorewomen’s Basketball Falls to Widner, 73-52

Clark Scores 12; Cramer and Jones Net 11 Each with Jones Handing Out Career-High Five Assists

MIAMI, Fla. – #24 Widener led Washington College 49-45 late in the third quarter before using a 16-2 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to take control of the game and came away with a 73-52 win on Tuesday afternoon at the HoopMIA D3 Holiday Shootout in a non-conference women’s basketball game at Immaculata-La Salle High School.  The 24th-ranked Pride improve to 10-0 overall, while the Shorewomen fall to 6-4.

How It Happened
– The Pride scored eight straight points to take a 10-2 lead with 6:12 to go in the first quarter on a layup by Kyra Schenk.  Widener would lead 25-10 after one quarter.
– In the second quarter, the Shorewomen trailed 32-16 before going on a 14-7 run to trim the Pride’s lead to 38-30 with 1:13 to go in the quarter on a Crystal Jones three-pointer.  Widener would score the final bucket of the second to take a 40-30 lead into the halftime break.
– Washington opened the third quarter scoring 11 of the first 16 points to trim the Widener lead to 45-41 with 5:27 to go on a three-point play by Emilee Cramer.
– Leading 49-45, Widener scored the final five points to take a 54-45 lead heading into the fourth following a Devan Rimmer triple with 1:04 to go.
– Widener netted 11 of the opening 13 points in the fourth quarter to take a 65-47 lead with 5:58 to go on a Rimmer three-point play.  The Pride used a 16-2 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to break open a four-point game.

For The Shorewomen (6-4)
– Caitlyn Clark (12 points), Cramer (11 points), Jones (11 points and career-high five assists), Cassidy Quattro (game-best 10 rebounds)
– WC shot 35% from the floor (22-for-63), 18% from three-point range (3-for-17) and 56% (5-for-9) from the foul line in the game.
– The Shorewomen turned it over 21 times.
– Washington outrebounded Widener, 40-35, and held a 12-4 advantage in second chance points.

For #24 Widener (10-0)
– Rimmer (21 points), Schenk (14 points and seven rebounds), Jordan D’Ambrosio (11 points and three steals), Madison Ireland (six assists)
– The Pride shot 48% from the floor (30-for-62), 39% from three-point land (5-for-13) and 73% from the foul stripe (8-for-11).
– Widener outscored Washington College in points in the paint (40-32), points off turnovers (19-14), bench points (23-15) and transition points (6-2).
