Qlarant Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Qlarant, the nationally recognized program integrity and quality improvement company, has awarded financial grants to twenty Maryland and District of Columbia organizations. Members of the Board of Directors for Qlarant Foundation held a virtual reception for the 2021 Grant Awards.

Qlarant Foundation presented $412,500 to twenty non-profit organizations: Qlarant CEO Dr. Ron Forsythe, Jr. (left) and Qlarant Foundation Chair Dominic Szwaja (right)

For the second consecutive year, hosting a virtual reception for the grantees was chosen in place of an in-person gathering.

“Our annual awards ceremony is the most important event on our calendar each year,” said Dominic Szwaja, Board Chair for Qlarant Foundation. “The networking opportunity that our annual event provides is mentioned by our grantees as being one of the most meaningful parts of our grant program. Last year’s virtual event was extremely well received so this year we wanted to ensure that it met those expectations and improved upon them. Each organization had the opportunity to present the amazing work they do and become more familiar with regional organizations with similar missions.”

The 2021 grant recipients include 13 returning organizations: Bay Hundred Community Volunteers, Breast Care for Washington, D.C., Camp Attaway, Critical Repairs Caroline County, Eastern Shore Wellness Solutions, Girls in the Game, Grace Center for Maternal and Women’s Health, Helping Up Mission, Miriam’s Kitchen, Talbot County Empty Bowls, Ulman Foundation, University Legal Services Jail and Prison Advocacy Project, and University of Maryland Medical Center’s Breathmobile. Seven first time grantees this year include Bright Beginnings, Community Free Clinic, International Rescue Committee, NAMI Maryland, Talbot Interfaith Shelter, The House DC, and There Goes My Hero. Each of the grantee organizations are dedicated to providing health and human services to underserved populations. Representatives from each organization as well as Qlarant board members and associates attended the 90-minute event.

During the event, each of the organizations were highlighted in video segments (to be featured on Qlarant’s website and YouTube channel) and given the opportunity answer one of four questions designed to share knowledge and strategies amongst the pool of non-profit leaders.

“Each of our grantees this year are so vital in their communities,” said Molly Burgoyne-Brian, Qlarant Foundation Vice Chair. “We encouraged our grantees to share some of their best practices in a variety of related areas for the benefit of the group. Part of our goals at Qlarant is to positively impact the community and this event was designed to further that goal. We’ve now been able to give over $6 million dollars to organizations like these since 2006.”

June 30, 2021 by Spy Desk

Qlarant CEO Dr. Ron Forsythe, Jr. and Qlarant Foundation Chair Dominic Szwaja present the 2021 Grant Award totaling $412,500.

Qlarant Foundation, the mission arm of Qlarant, will provide grants totaling $412,500 to 20 community organizations that support underserved populations in Maryland and Washington, DC.

The Foundation reviewed applications from 79 highly-qualified organizations and ultimately selected eighteen organizations to receive grants and ranging from $10,000 to $40,000. In addition, they selected two organizations to receive smaller financial gifts to support short-term projects.

“Our grantee organizations are a special group, dedicated to improving the lives of extremely vulnerable people in their communities,” said Dominic Szwaja, Chair of the Qlarant Foundation Board of Directors.

“The efforts of these organizations reach people across a large geographic area and address both medical and social issues impacting their clients’ health.” Dr. Catherine Smoot-Haselnus, Chair of the Qlarant Board of Directors said, “As we experienced last year at the start of the pandemic, COVID-19 has intensified the needs of these organizations. We’re so pleased to be able to once again, have the opportunity to support programs that improve the health of individuals and communities in the region.”

Grantee organizations usually look forward to getting acquainted and sharing information about their programs during the annual Qlarant Foundation Grantee Awards event, which is normally held at Qlarant’s corporate headquarters on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Recognizing the continuing need for social distancing, Qlarant will host a virtual reception on Wednesday, July 21st.

This year, Qlarant Foundation has funded these impactful programs:

Bay Hundred Community Volunteers—Constructs and installs aluminum modular wheelchair ramps to eliminate barriers to obtaining medical care for residents with functional disabilities and reduce isolation and loneliness.

Miriam’s Kitchen—A social service program providing nutritious meals in a dining room setting for the homeless, with doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, and lawyers on location to break down barriers and improve access to care.

National Alliance on Mental Illness, Maryland—Strives to improve the quality-of-life for individuals with mental illness and their families across Maryland, including all socioeconomic, race, ethnic, gender, or other statuses.

Qlarant Continues to Earn CMMI Level 3 Status

April 23, 2021 by Spy Desk

Share

Qlarant today announced that it has concluded its triennial audit and has again achieved CMMI level 3 appraisal status. The appraisal was performed by Broadsword Solutions Corporation – a CMMI Institute Partner company based in Detroit, Michigan.

CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Institute) is a capability improvement framework that provides organizations with the essential elements of effective processes that ultimately improve their performance. A CMMI appraisal enables others to identify the capability of an organization and was originally introduced by the Department of Defense to determine the maturity and efficiency levels of the companies they hired. The appraisal looks at industry best practices and matches them to the output of an organization.

“When we were originally appraised in 2018, the Executive Leadership team provided full support by investing in both internal and external training, workshops, conferences and on-site consulting services for our team members,” said Qlarant CEO Dr. Ronald Forsythe, Jr. “Our Maturity Level 3 status is an indicator to our customers that we are prepared and capable of providing the best results and superior quality in all of our products and services.”

An appraisal at maturity level 3 indicates that the organization is performing at a “defined” level. Level 3 processes are well characterized and understood, and are described in standards, procedures, tools, and methods. The organization’s set of standard processes, which is the basis for maturity level 3, are established and improved over time.

“Qlarant once again achieved an appraisal maturity level 3 due to our discipline in adhering to existing standard processes, while constantly improving our process performance, implementing new processes, and including best practices,” said Qlarant Corporate Quality Officer Carolyn H. Lane. “Our culture is based on high quality standards used in our everyday practices, which also contributed to Qlarant achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification, another high mark. Ultimately, this has provided Qlarant the opportunity to better serve the needs of our customers.”

Qlarant Internship Program Nets New Talent

August 1, 2020 by Spy Desk

Share

Qlarant, one of the top program integrity and quality companies in the nation, has successfully completed their 8-week summer internship program despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now entering its 47th year, Qlarant hosted eight college interns for the paid, multi-week program utilizing its coast-to-coast network of offices. Under the guidance and coordination of George Moye, SHRM-CP, Qlarant was quickly able to readjust from a planned on-site program to a fully remote program. In the work-from-home environment, each of the program participants were able to successfully complete their internship virtually and contribute to their respective assigned areas.

“I was worried with the ongoing pandemic that my internship would not be as productive as I wanted,” says intern Beka Modebadze. “Qlarant adapted to the adversity and provided the most valuable professional experience to me and to the other interns.”

“I can’t express how pleasantly surprised I was to learn that the program was a ‘go’ despite the pandemic”, said Ellen Evans, Qlarant Director of Sales. “Clearly, our HR team did an excellent job of onboarding the interns because they stepped right in an added value from Day 1.”

Despite the additional work created by the pandemic, the program grew over the previous years’ opportunities from two to eight available internships. Also growing this year was the number of interns that will be staying on as full time associates.

“In 2019, we were able to hire two of our interns coming out of the program,” said George Moye. “This year we broke that record and will be hiring three recent college graduates to stay on and continue to add value to the company.”

Partial funding for the program came from the Maryland Technology Internship Program, which focuses on STEM majors and career paths. Internships in areas such as Data Science and Data Analysis are key to Qlarant’s products and services. Other internships centered on fraud investigations, business development, sales, and corporate training. Each intern received special onboarding training, met with Qlarant CEO Dr. Ron Forsythe, Jr., and was assigned a mentor to guide them, build their skills, and reach educational goals.

“As a mentor, the process to bring on the interns was seamless”, said Zehra Zaidi, Qlarant Director of Product Management. “They were not only engaged with their project work, but had the opportunity to network virtually with their peers on a weekly basis and had the opportunity to display their skills, leading some to full time offers at Qlarant.”

Qlarant will begin recruiting for the 2021 internship program in late 2020 with the goal of continuing the success and growth seen this summer.

Qlarant Hosts Virtual Grant Awards Event

July 18, 2020 by Spy Desk

Qlarant Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Qlarant, the nationally recognized program integrity and quality company, has awarded financial grants to sixteen Maryland and District of Columbia organizations. Members of the Board of Directors for Qlarant Foundation held a virtual reception for the 2020 Grant Awards.

In an average year, Qlarant holds their annual awards ceremony in their Easton, Maryland headquarters. In the current environment, hosting a physical reception for the grantees was not a viable option. A virtual reception was planned instead.

“We were challenged by circumstance to create a virtual event for our grantees and board members to attend online,” said Dr. Molly Burgoyne-Brian, Board Chair for Qlarant Foundation. “Aside from the grant itself, the networking opportunity that our annual event provides is often mentioned by our grantees as being one of the best parts of our program. By going fully online, we were able to have multiple representatives from each organization participate and join in discussions to share information. We’ve now given over $5.5 million dollars to organizations like these since 2007.”

L-R: Qlarant Foundation Chair Molly Burgoyne-Brian, Qlarant Board Member Dr. Senora Simpson, Qlarant CEO Dr. Ron Forsythe, Jr., and Qlarant Foundation Secretary Brenda Crabbs.

The 2020 grant recipients include returning organizations: Breast Care for Washington, D.C., Calvary Women’s Services, Camp Attaway, Deep Roots, Eastern Shore Wellness Solutions, Girls in the Game, Grace Center for Maternal and Women’s Health, Helping Up Mission, Miriam’s Kitchen, Shepherd’s Clinic, University Legal Services Jail and Prison Advocacy Project, and University of Maryland Medical Center’s Breathmobile. All of these organizations are dedicated to providing health and human services to underserved populations. First time grantees included Bay Hundred Community Volunteers, Mid-Shore Pro Bono, Talbot County Empty Bowls, and the Ulman Foundation. Over 50 representatives from across all of the organizations attended virtually.

During the event, each of the grantees were highlighted in a pre-produced video segment (available on Qlarant’s website) and given the opportunity to present a brief summary of their organizations’ work. They also were asked to speak to some of the “unexpected positives” each non-profit has experienced while adjusting to COVID-19.

“At first it didn’t feel like there were any positives, but there have been positives,” said Sue Ann Shafley, Executive Director at Camp Attaway, a therapeutic program serving children ages 7-13 with complex emotional and behavioral disorders. “Because of COVID, we had to get really creative and we had to think, ‘How can we get kids to feel connected over the internet?’ So we decided we would do things like have pizza parties online and have pizza delivered to their homes and send tents to them so during camp they could get in their tents. Learning new platforms helps kids stay connected after camp is over.”

“Not everything about the quarantine has to be focused on what we can’t do,” said Deb Keller, Qlarant Vice President. “We encouraged our grantees to share some of the positives they’ve discovered while adapting to the ‘new normal’ for the benefit of the group. Part of our goals at Qlarant is to positively impact the community and this event was designed to further that goal.”
