Exit Interview: WC’s Bryan Matthews on Lacrosse, Women’s Athletics, and Small Colleges

June 6, 2016 by Dave Wheelan

Share

Long before Bryan Matthews became the athletic director for Washington College in 1990, he had already established himself as one of the country’s leading college lacrosse goalies as a student at WC as well of the sport’s most competitive and successful coaches with record-breaking seasons at both his alma mater and the United States Naval Academy. So it came as no surprise to most that he would return to Chestertown to lead school’s athletic programs.

What did come as a real surprise was the extraordinary way in which Matthews transitioned WC’s male dominated sports program into a remarkable model of co-educational team development and opportunity. Charged with the implication of Title IV law, Bryan, and his colleagues have worked tirelessly for twenty years to completely change the nature and culture of the school’s approach to team sports.

Now that he is set for retirement in early July, Matthews agreed to share his thoughts with the Spy about his career in college sports and his plans for a second career working with Dixon Valve’s Dick Goodall to help keep Chestertown growing with new development initiatives.

In the 1940’s my mother played field hockey on back lots in Chestertown . In the 1960’s & 70’s a remarkable group of women led by the indomitable Penny Fall renewed organized sports for women at WC. And in the early ’80’s we took on more field games with donated equipment in club lax on the front lawn under the guidance of towney Nancy Dick. We are played for the love of the sport….and friendship. Best memories ever! Thanks Brian for conserving this legacy for all.
