Council Funds NEA Match for Wilmer Playscape

April 9, 2014 by Daniel Menefee

Share

On Monday the Chestertown Council approved funding of up to $18,500 to match a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to plan a playscape at Wilmer Park.

The playscape would be marketed to attract more traffic to the town’s arts district–as well as premier nonprofit attractions like the Sultana and Prince Theatre.

The idea was introduced last year by Town Manager Bill Ingersoll who met with artists and art businesses that are within a few blocks of Wilmer — with the focus of making Chestertown an arts destination.

A town match of $25,000 was originally budgeted in fiscal 2013 for anticipated costs of $50,000, but the only bid received came in at $37,000 from Ziger/Snead of Baltimore.

The town match will come from the general fund, Ingersoll said.

My apologies for not having read beyond the initial story. The attachments are extremely helpful. Thank you for your patience with cursory readers.

    Editor,

I voted against the funding because the town was the only entity that is paying into the grant not against the concept. If it was a true partnership then all of those who will benefit from the enterprise should help pay into it. It should not always fall on the shoulders of the taxpayers of Chestertown. I am also concerned that we will be getting the same information that we received from the recent joint task force studying the waterfront. The town ended up paying for that.
