A public hearing on proprosed changes to Chestertown’s sign ordinance is scheduled before the town council at 7 p.m. on Aug. 19.
The changes add new definitions of “internally lit cabinets” that are banned in Chestertown under current zoning laws and the existing historic guidelines. The changes also allow for the Garfield Center to keep signs on all three sides of their marquee because of historic photographs that document similarly.
“[The proposal] does everything with the [Garfield Center’s] marquee that needs to be done to bring it into compliance,” said Chestertown Town Manager Bill Ingersoll. “And it states clearly what the planning commission had recommended.”
If the Planning Commission’s recommendations are approved, televisions and computer screens, projection screens, and programmable LED signs will fall under the definition of an “internally lit cabinet” and will be prohibited.
It is likely the measure will face a challenge from representatives of the Garfield Center, who lost an attempt earlier this year to place an LED screen over the transom to the theatre entrance.

This town’s commercial zoning enforcement is a walking violation of the 4th amendment. If you’re buddies with Kees & Bill, you can do what you like, but all others beware. Guess the rest of us don’t sit at the “cool kids table” during lunch. A business is hard enough to run with out these public nuisances running amok in our town. The obvious favoritism makes me ill.
