Saint Martin’s Ministries Launches New Name, New Look

September 6, 2020 by St. Martin's Ministries

Share

The Board of Directors announced today it is changing the name of St. Martin’s Ministries to Martin’s House & Barn to better reflect today’s mission while honoring its revered past. With the name change comes a new logo featuring a tagline that captures Martin’s House & Barn’s efforts to provide shelter, food and clothing for families in need.

The name change process has been underway for more than a year. While seeking a name that more accurately reflects the work currently being done by the shelter, The Board of Directors felt it was important to retain the founders’ vision to honor St. Martin de Porres, the Peruvian Monk and Saint, who was noted for his values of racial harmony, humility, unremitting care and concern for the poor, children and the sick.

The Benedictine Sisters of Ridgely founded St. Martin’s Barn in 1983 and began collecting and delivering food and clothing to their neighbors in need. They used an old dairy barn on their property to begin operations. A decade later they began construction on the building that would be known as the House as a transitional residence for homeless women and children. The Sisters relocated to Newark, Delaware, last year and have not been involved in the day-to-day management or Board of Directors in more than five years.

“We have been a freestanding non-denominational non-profit since 2015. Martin’s House & Barn recognized that its former name was more reflective of the Benedictine Sisters, yet no longer describes our current structure and services,” said Rick Lincicome, Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors.

“We are committed to sustaining the Sisters’ goals while also evolving to complete structural independence from the Benedictine Ministry in Ridgely. Our shelter services have now matured from longer-stay young women and children to serving whole families struggling with homelessness on an emergency level. It was time to consider evolving our name too,” he noted.

“Ministering to basic needs of those caught in the cycle of poverty was the energizing force behind our founding St. Martin’s almost forty years ago. Providing essential services has made an enormous difference in the lives of thousands of people on the Eastern Shore. Today, a new name and logo symbolize an exciting new chapter that compels the present leadership to forge ahead with continued enthusiasm to attend to basic human needs in the twenty-first century,” said OSB Executive Director Emerita Sr. Patricia Gamgort.

Martin’s House & Barn provides shelter, food and clothing in the House and historic 100-year-old Barn on its four-acre complex. Clients and volunteers describe these structures as memorable physical symbols of compassion on the Eastern Shore.

Located on MD Route 312 South outside of Ridgely, Md., Martin’s House & Barn provides a safety net for individuals and families living in poverty. Offering an array of services through a single point of entry with a dignified case management approach to address immediate and long-term needs, Martin’s House & Barn offers four assistance programs including an Emergency Family Shelter, Emergency Food Pantry, Homelessness Prevention Services, and a Thrift Store.

L-R Author – Johnny O’Brien, Emcee – Ben Tilghman, SMM CEO – Jean Austin, Author – Claudia Kalb and SMM Chair of the Board of Directors – Mark Freestate.

Claudia Kalb, whose book Andy Warhol was a Hoarder, shared stories about eccentricities of such famous persons as Marilyn Monroe and George Gershwin, in addition to Warhol. His work, Semisweet: An Orphan’s journey Through the School the Hershey’s Built, details many twists and turns in his life including the discovery that he is not truly an orphan. O’Brien’s keen insight into how individuals react to institutional settings was clearly illustrated by the examples he shared.

House Resident, Zymira Lofland (with help from her daughter) preparing a recipe from Good and Cheap: Eat Well on $4/day

A resident of Saint Martin’s House, staff and volunteer Charlotte Hawes are making a special effort to provide food pantry clients with new ways to prepare some familiar foods this week.

For Christmas some of the families who come to Saint Martin’s Ministries for emergency food received the Kickstarter project cookbook, Good and Cheap: Eat Well on $4/day by Leanne Brown. Good and Cheap started as a free PDF cookbook for people with tight budgets, especially people receiving SNAP/Food Stamp benefits. The Kickstarter project funded a print run using a “get one, give one system” and has resulted in almost 9,000 printed copies donated to people in need.

Saint Martin’s purchased copies of Good and Cheap at the non-profit discounted rate and is sharing them with clients this holiday season. Jean Austin, CEO of Saint Martin’s Ministries, said, “It is a lovely cookbook with beautiful pictures and simple, tasty recipes. Often the food we are able to provide through government sources and the food bank is very plain. Leanne’s book demonstrates how to make basic foods taste better with spices and a variety of cooking techniques. There is an emphasis on healthier approaches such as turning a can of vegetables into a spread and serving it on whole wheat toast.”

Volunteer Charlotte Hawes gives out samples and a copy of the cookbook that provides families easy nutritious recipes to make on a food stamp budget.

Saint Martin’s House resident Zymira Lofland who has a background in culinary arts prepared several of the recipes from the book for clients of the emergency food pantry to try. Residents of

Saint Martin’s House establish personal goals to help themselves become self-sufficient. Zymira’s goal is to establish a catering business.
