Save the Date: Adkins and AAM Going to NYC to See Noguchi Sculptures September 30

July 28, 2015 by Adkins Arboretum

Join Adkins Arboretum and Academy Art Museum on Wed., Sept. 30 for a trip to Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the opportunity to view a special fall exhibition of sculptures by renowned Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi. Organized in collaboration with The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum, the show will include more than a dozen works by Noguchi sited throughout BBG’s outdoor and indoor public gardens.

In celebration of the BBG Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden’s centennial anniversary, the exhibit will feature six large-scale works situated among the garden’s rolling hills, pond, rocks and plantings. While the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden is the center of the exhibition, the installation will extend to other areas of BBG. Several of Noguchi’s interpretations of rock formations will be installed along the grassy hillsides near BBG’s Rock Garden. Other works will be displayed in the diverse settings of the C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum, the Desert Pavilion, the Native Flora Garden, the Osborne Garden, the Plant Family Collection and Ginkgo Allée.

Opened in 1915, the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden was the first Japanese garden created in an American public garden. It is one of the oldest and most visited Japanese-inspired gardens outside Japan and is considered the masterpiece of its creator, landscape designer Takeo Shiota.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden also features a new green-roofed visitor center and Native Flora Garden expansion—a newly planted area that features a cultivated pine barrens and a meadow modeled after Long Island’s Hempstead Plains. The habitats include native species, many of them rare or threatened, and most propagated from seeds collected legally in the wild.

The fee of $125 for members and $150 for non-members includes transportation, driver gratuity and admission. Visit adkinsarboretum.org for full details.

The bus departs from 315 Aurora Park Drive in Easton at 7 a.m. and from the Route 50 westbound Park and Ride at Route 404 at 7:20 a.m. An additional stop at 7:50 a.m. at the 301/291 Park and Ride will be added upon request for Chestertown-area residents. The bus will depart from BBG at 4 p.m. to return at approximately 8 p.m. in Easton. To ensure the trip proceeds, advance registration is required by Wed., Sept. 2 at adkinsarboretum.org or by calling 410-634-2847, ext. 0.
