The Garfield Center for the Arts begins its holiday season with The Book of Liz, a comic treat from “The Talent Family”: Amy and David Sedaris. Amy is perhaps best known for her character Jerri Blank from Strangers with Candy and capitalizes on her ironic interest in homemaking, entertaining, and baking, particularly the fine art of the cheese ball in The Book of Liz. David is an essayist and humorist favored by NPR, whose books can be found on discriminating bookshelves and who is currently on tour reading excerpts from his most recent book, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls.
The Book of Liz is the tale of Sister Elizabeth Donderstock, a Squeamish nun who makes delicious cheese balls, but runs away when she is no longer appreciated. Will she find herself? How does Mr. Peanut figure into things? Will the cheese balls ever taste the same again? And what exactly is a breakfast burrito? All these questions and more will be answered in the upcoming production of The Book of Liz.
Featuring an amazing cast including newcomers to the GCA stage Taylor Gorycki and Colin Graves, theatre vet and funny lady Jen Friedman, Playmaker alums Bryan Betley and Dylan Wayne, and Short Attention Span Theatre regulars Heather Oland, Genna Kuster and Paul Briggs!
The Book of Liz is the perfect cold-weather comedy: hysterically funny, surprisingly touching, and full of the biting wit of David Sedaris, combined with the naughty, but sweet, absurdity of his sister Amy. The Book of Liz is directed by Mark Sullivan (producer of Short Attention Span Theatre and local playwright), and produced by GCA Producing Artistic Director, Lucia Foster who recently appeared in Church Hill Theatre’s Spitfire Grill.
The Book of Liz begins performances November 15th and runs through November 24 th at The Garfield Center for the Arts at the Prince Theatre.
Amy Sedaris describes the play, an off-Broadway hit from 2001, thusly: “It explores the Buddhist principle of idiot compassion. Like when someone’s drowning and you try to save them, knowing that you could drown, too.” Sit by and watch it all happen, beginning on November 15th.
