During the month of September, students from all Kent County Public Schools participated in their first Attendance Awareness Poster Contest. The contest was a joint partnership of Kent Forward and the KCPS Office of Student Services. Students were asked to design a poster with a slogan and picture of what attendance means to them.
Several hundred posters were created. The winner of the contest was Samantha Delboy, a second grade student from Worton Elementary School. Her slogan, BE COOL, COME TO SCHOOL, along with her drawing which also incorporated the pillars from Character Counts! will be used to create a banner that will be displayed at the KCPS with the best attendance that month.
Over ninety posters were displayed in seventeen downtown Chestertown merchant’s windows during First Friday, October 4th and Saturday, October 5th. Overall there were twenty-six overall winners who received prizes donated by the following merchants- Washington College, Carla Massoni Gallery, Peoples Bank, Chesapeake Bank and Trust, Stam’s Drugstore, Houston’s Dockside Emporium, The Garfield Center for the Arts, Book Plate, and Nana’s Niche. For a complete listing of winners, please visit the KCPS web site.
September is National Attendance Awareness Month and along with the poster contest, banners, donated by local businesses were hung at all school reminding children to “Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow”. The Kent County Commissioners proclaimed September as Attendance Awareness Month and Dr. Sandra Alberti, from Student Achievement Partners, spoke with parents on the Common Core Standards in conjunction with a spaghetti dinner sponsored by the Kent County Middle School.
