The Old Mill Market and Cafe at 207 Cross Street in Chestertown is the rebirth of the Old Mill Bakery and Cafe, which closed over three years ago when owner Jeff Carroll put his efforts into creating and managing the highly popular Fish Whistle, located at the Chestertown Marina on the Chester River.

But local builder Skip Bushby believed the location on Cross Street still had great potential as a cafe and retail seafood market. So Carroll and Bushby went to work renovating the cafe and assembling one of nicest staffs in the downtown shopping district.
The seafood is gorgeous and Bushby and Head Chef Paul Cambardella compliment each other’s expertise to deliver a warm and friendly atmosphere–as well as true gourmet food.
Entering the Cafe you can smell homemade soups at the entrance–most of the soups are gluten free. The chili is wonderfully complicated–a lot going on there, and a bowl of the chili, gumbo or crab bisque is a full meal.
The Cafe also boasts a generous pulled pork sandwich in a tangy sauce.
But the popularity of the seafood is surging ahead of everything else and a loyal base of local residents is growing by the week, Cambardella says.
“The idea that I can walk here and get great seafood is heaven sent,” said one local resident–marveling at the seafood case.
Fear not the parking meters because the cafe has plenty of off-street parking. The Cafe is located across from the Chester River Bike & Paddle Shop near the corner of Cross and Cannon Streets.
The Spy sat down with Cambardella to talk about his love of food and his commitment to making the dining experience at the Old Mill Market and Cafe–one to remember.
The video is about 2 minutes.

Congratulations! The “good” news about Chestertown – the people, the service, the food – and the bikers who say in unison “We just love Chestertown!”

When I first moved to Chestertown, I couldn’t believe that I had to leave town to buy good seafood. Often, we’d stop at Whole Foods on the way back from seeing the grandkids in Baltimore. What is wrong with this picture — having to leave the Shore to get good fish and crabmeat? The Old Mill Market has righted the wrong. It is delightful to have high-quality, fresh fish right in town. We go there two or three times a week to get fish for dinner. We love the variety which is motivating us to try new fish and experiment with new recipes.
