Maryland First District Representative Andy Harris is a physician who betrays his profession by peddling deadly snake oil when he urges his constituents to ignore the only safety rules we have to blunt the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a way it is worse than Trump’s suggesting that mainlining Lysol might be a cure for the virus since a vast majority of Americans have the sense to realize that the president’s lies are his only refuge from his studied ignorance.
Following Dr. Harris’s advice will only open his listeners to infection and family, or worse, infecting others who might not share their Fox News and Trumpian delusions about the coronavirus pandemic somehow magically dissipating if only we all go back to work.
An anesthetist, he might have once known something about infectious diseases, but certainly didn’t demonstrate it at a mostly mask-free rally of Trump supporters Saturday. “I am a physician,” Dr. Harris declared. “Let me tell you something: It is safe to begin to reopen Maryland.” His evidence? An assertion that the worst-case scenario of two million Americans, including up to 40,000 Marylanders will not die.
He left off the reason why the worst-case scenario will not happen: The lock-down restrictions on Marylanders and other states with knowledgeable and responsible governors have imposed on non-essential work, travel, shopping, and recreation to blunt transmission of a stealthy, easily caught, and sometimes fatal virus. Oh, and of course wearing a face mask to cut down transmission of the disease that you might not know you have until its symptoms strike.
Then he made the loony claim that the restrictions on mass gatherings mean that Marylanders cannot practice their religion.
“I didn’t wake up in Communist China. I didn’t wake up in North Korea this morning. And tomorrow morning, I should be able to go to the church of my choice,” Dr. Harris declared.
Apparently, Dr. Harris did not notice what Archbishop Lori said when suspending church attendance: “I have been in ongoing contact with state leaders and public health professionals, as well as with the clergy and lay leaders of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Those consultations convinced me that we must do all we can to prevent the further spread of the COVID-19 virus in our community, even if it means we may not be able to receive the Eucharist for what may be a significant period of time. This is for the wellbeing not only of the faithful of our Archdiocese, but for all the people of Maryland.”

Thank you Bentley for putting reason before insanity.

It certainly seems that Andy Harris has forgotten the Hippocratic Oath and that his words border on recklessly endangering the health and safety of his constituents.
