Senior Nation: Gray Power on the Mid-Shore with Professor Memo Diriker

October 5, 2016 by Dave Wheelan

Share

For Memo Diriker, the founding director of the Business, Economic, and Community Outreach Network (BEACON) at the Perdue School at Salisbury University, the extraordinary explosion of its senior population of the Mid-Shore is pretty old news for him. As someone that has been tracking the elder demographic on the Eastern Shore for fifteen years, Diriker is neither shocked nor amazed at the unprecedented shift for the Delmarva.

Since the 1990 government census, Dr. Diriker has watched the growth of the 50-plus population stemming from the increase of the retirees from the Western Shore and the rise of immigration families to the Shore bringing their elder family members with them.

What does intrigue Memo though is the sheer power this segment can represent politically, socially, and economically for places like the Mid-Shore, and how it may be used effectively to bring much-needed services and support as this important segment of the Eastern Shore continues to grow.

In his Spy Senior Nation interview, Memo talks about the Eastern Shore Senior population and the extraordinary influence it will have in the years to come.
