RiverArts’ Clay Studio at 204 High Street has been very successful in offering a range of classes from beginners pottery wheel, handbuilding techniques, Talavera painting, mosaics, and more. Interest has been so high, in fact, that many have requested that summer workshops be expanded from 4-week workshops to 8 weeks. These classes are being taught by two of RiverArts most popular teachers: Doug Sassi and Marilee Schumann. There are a few spaces left in each class. The registration deadline for each workshop is July – so sign up now!
“Handbuilding” with Doug Sassi will be held Wednesday evenings, July 6-August 23, 6:00-8:30. The class will teach handbuilding techniques starting with pinch pots. This is a method of constructing larger forms which can be functional (vases, lidded jars, lamps) as well as sculptural. Also participants will learn to roll out slabs and construct forms which are like the coil technique, again either functional or sculptural. Combining techniques is also an option. The cost for members is $230 and for non-members $270.
Marilee Schumann will be teaching two different classes both of which will focus on aesthetics, craftsmanship, and personal expression. “Beginners Pottery 2” has the prerequisite of having taken “Beginning Pottery 1”. Sessions will be held Thursday evenings, July 7- August 25, 6:00-8:30. Students will learn the process of making ceramics on the pottery wheel – including glazing.
Marilee’s “Intermediate/Advanced Potters Wheel class will be held Tuesday evenings, July 5-August 23, 6:00-8:30. This class is for experienced potters who want to continue developing their throwing and creative techniques through one-on-one teaching and self-directed projects.
The cost of Marilee’s classes is $230 for members and $285 for non-members. This includes the first 25 lbs of clay and bisque firing. There is an extra fee for glaze firings dependent on the size of the piece. Tool kits may be purchased during the first class for $25.
