On Wednesday, May 4, H.H. Garnett Elementary welcomed the community to “Family Fitness Night.” Led by physical education teacher Rusty Pritzloff, children and their parents spent the evening running, jumping, and learning about living a healthy lifestyle. The H.H. Garnett PTA sponsored a book fair in the library.
The gym was filled with activities promoting physical activity. Jump rope, hula hoops, and sit-up and push-up stations were just a few of the activities. By far the most popular station among the children was the obstacle course, where they ran, leaped, crawled and climbed through various obstacles trying to make their fastest time. For the duration of the event families participated together in these fun and healthy activities.
In addition to the gym activities, there were other groups with displays and activities. The Kent County Health Department was on hand with T-shirts and information about healthy lifestyles, particularly the benefits of being a non-smoker. Colchester Farms was on hand providing information about their CSA program and healthy eating.
Alpha Best, a before and after school care program that hopes to bring its program to Kent County schools in the fall, was on hand as well. The program serves children in grades K-5 and provides enriching programming for children in the hours before and after school. Their fees are prorated based on need.
At the end of the evening, the PTA provided healthy yogurt treats for all of the kids. A drawing for door prizes was held and participants were awarded balls, jump ropes, and various fun toys by Mr. Pritzloff and Ms. Crowding, Garnett’s principal. The event was another example of Garnett’s strength in community building through families and learning.
