The Institute for Adult Learning (IAL) at Chesapeake College will hold its Showcase of Classes on Thursday, January 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Todd Performing Arts Center Lobby. Attendees can enjoy wine and cheese while socializing with IAL members and instructors and hear brief descriptions of the classes offered during the spring semester.
IAL is open to all individuals 50 years or older and features classes, luncheons, lectures and special events such as day trips. This semester’s curriculum offers a wide range of courses.
Those who would like to increase their level of activity may want to try Tai Chi for Balance, Line Dancing or Tennis. Better Health Through Better Nutrition will help students develop strategies for eating out, healthy snacking, grocery shopping and cooking at home to delay the aging process and improve brain health.
Book and film lovers should consider taking Cinema Classics; Contemporary Fiction: Novels in Translation from Around the World; Contemporary Literature, which will explore powerful novels from South Africa, Australia and Algeria; The Films of Roman Polanski; or Memoir Writing, a one-day event to help jumpstart your own memoir.
Those interested in the arts may enjoy Photography of A. Aubrey Bodine, the world-renowned photojournalist who worked for the Baltimore Sun from 1920 – 1970; Digital Photography Basics; Drawing Made Easy; Zendalas: Zentangle in the Round; or The Woman Was an Artist.
Foodies may be interested in taking a one-session cooking class taught in the College’s commercial kitchen. Choices include Chinese Cuisine, Italian Cuisine, and Soup du Jour. In addition, a wine tasting course, featuring French, American and Canadian wines, will help you choose the perfect wines for special occasions, such as Easter, Thanksgiving and other festive occasions.
Students interested in the social sciences and history can analyze and interpret the second and third books of the Harry Potter series from both a psychological and a literature perspective. Analysis and Discussion of “The Dragons of Eden” will explore the psychology and social implications of Carl Sagan’s book on psychology.
Current Events provides an opportunity for class members to discuss wide-ranging topics from world events, politics, science, the environment, business, medicine, sports and religion with a goal of stimulating discussion, fostering respect for differing points of view, exploring unfamiliar areas and learning from each other. Great Decisions focuses on complex foreign policy decision-making and helps students broaden their outlook on major issues worldwide.
A new course this semester is Investigating Sustainability which will apply concepts of sustainability, sustainable development, interdependency and systems thinking to both international and local communities, including the Delmarva region and Chesapeake College’s own sustainability program.
Pilgrimage in World Religions will probe the nature and practice of sacred travel within a variety of world religions. A United States History course covering the period from 1865 to 1918 will examine the Reconstruction Period, the development of big business and labor problems, and the political and foreign affairs leading to our involvement in World War I.
A one-day session will feature Phil Hesser, the author of “What a River Says – Exploring the Blackwater River and Refuge,” who will trace trends related to Blackwater that transformed Delmarva’s livelihood, infrastructure, landscape and nature.
Wouldn’t you Rather Be on a Cruise? will provide an insider’s look at ports of the Western Mediterranean, from Barcelona to Venice, offering cultural insights and highlighting the region’s fascinating history. Students with some basic knowledge of the Italian language can improve their communication skills with Foundations of Italian II.
Additionally, a two-session course, Rejuvenate Your Retirement, will offer retirees a greater understanding of personal finance, and science fans can study Petrology and the Rock Cycle or Horticulture.
