The marijuana industry’s first full-time lobbyist will talk about the challenges to further legalizing the drug across the U.S. in a presentation Wednesday, September 3 at Washington College. Michael Correia, director of government relations for the National Cannabis Industry Association, will speak at 7:00 p.m. in Hynson Lounge, Hodson Hall, 300 Washington Avenue. The title of his talk is “Challenges to Legalizing Marijuana: Resolving State-Federal Conflict.”
Effective January 1, 2014 the State of Colorado allowed for the first legal sales of marijuana in almost 80 years; Washington State followed suit and began legal sales to adults starting on July 8. This November, ballot initiatives in Alaska, Oregon, Florida, and the District of Columbia will determine whether to allow for some form of marijuana legalization. All of this state action is occurring despite the fact that marijuana is still not legal under Federal law. Correia will discuss this conflict and the prospects for more legalization and growth in the industry.
Before joining the cannabis trade association, Correia worked as a Republican staffer on the House Committee on Natural Resources, a senior project manager for the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, and a director of federal affairs for the American Legislative Exchange Council, an organization that advocates for limited government and free markets. He is a graduate of the University of California at San Diego.
