Kent LWV Jump-Starts Fall Election Season

Although the November 4 general election is still several months away, the Kent County League of Women Voters is jump-starting the election season. As usual, the public can meet and compare the candidates in a controlled format at forums sponsored by the League. The November election will see voters deciding local, state and federal offices.

The League has scheduled the first of six forums for 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Kent County Library in Chestertown. There, the candidates for three Kent County offices will appear — Sheriff, Register of Wills and Judge of the Orphans’ Court. They will be asked to talk about their qualifications and answer questions from the moderator, Dick Hawkins, and from the audience.

All are seeking election to four-year terms.

There is no opposition to John F. Price’s candidacy for the Kent Sheriff’s job, in which he now serves. The position pays an annual salary of $85,000.

Incumbent Nancy Jewell is running for another term as Register of Wills. She is challenged by candidate Les Moorhouse. The register job has a salary of $86,100.

Five people are seeking to be judges on the Kent County Orphans’ Court. There are three seats to be filled. The candidates are Elizabeth Carroll, Rosalie Kuechler, Tim Lloyd, Amy Nickerson and Paul Showalter. The position pays $4,000 per year.

Forums will also be held as follows:

Forum for the Kent County Clerk of Court and State’s Attorney. Held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2 at the Kent Library in Chestertown.

Forum for the Kent County Board of Education. Held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9 at the Kent Library in Chestertown.

Forum for the Maryland General Assembly (state legislature) District 36. Held at 6:30 p.m. for Senate candidates, 7:15 p.m. for House of Delegates candidates, both at the Queen Anne County Board of Education, Centreville, Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Forum for the Kent County Commissioners. Held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16 at Kent County High School in Worton.

Forum for the U.S. House of Representatives (Congress) District 1. Held at 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19 at Chesapeake College, Rts. 50 and 213, Wye Mills.

The forums scheduled for locations in Queen Anne’s County are jointly sponsored by the Leagues of Women Voters of Kent and Queen Anne’s County and the Mid-Shore League.
