Redner’s Markets, Inc. today announced plans for a 5th location in Maryland. Buoyed by successful stores in Cecil, Baltimore & Harford counties & after years in planning, company President and CEO, Richard Redner has signed an agreement to open a new warehouse market in Chestertown, Kent County with a tentative spring 2015 opening.
The Chestertown Warehouse Market will be located at 17 Washington Square, Chestertown within the Washington Square Shopping Center. Renovations to the existing building, formerly occupied by a Fresh & Green grocery store, are slated to begin upon obtaining all needed building permits and will include improvements to the existing building, as well as, a former Rite Aid. The store will measure approximately 44,000 square feet upon completion. SGM Realty, L.L.C. of Milford (De.) owns the property.
The new Chestertown Warehouse Market will be a full service grocery store offering services such as; in-store bakery, full-service deli, full service seafood, produce and meat departments, along with frozen, dairy, health and beauty aids/non-foods and grocery departments. For the consumer’s added convenience, the store will feature UScan Check-Out Terminals. Customers will also be able to take advantage of Redner’s Pump Perks fuel discount program and redeem at a local fuel station as yet to be determined. For every $100 spent on groceries, customers are able to earn a 10¢ discount per gallon, which can be used during a future fuel purchase. At full operating conditions, this store will employ approximately 130 people in both full and part-time positions.

How disappointing. Looks and sounds worse than Acme. Warehouse market? Great new for the farmers market though!

Editor,
Redner’s is actually a really great store. It’s an employee-owned regional grocer from PA. There’s one in Elkton for anyone wanting a preview. Although I shop mostly at the farmer’s market or grown my own during much of the year, I look for stores with good produce. Redner’s in Elkton has it (except okra for some reason).

Please do not use the self-checkout. It costs jobs. Jobs in Kent County are scarce enough, and each job helps keep a worker off Public Assistance, which WE pay for. The money cashiers make is circulated and re-circulated throughout our local economy. Every little bit helps! If the checkout line is long just ask the manager to open another.
John Rolfe says
The self checkout lines are going to be there anyway. Its not going to change anything. If the company is putting them in, they will cut down the cashiers to force people to use them.

Excellent!

Editor,
Last fall, when I ran for mayor, I heard disturbing rumors that Redner’s was not allowed to come to Chestertown. That seemed fishy to me, so I called them. I was told that they had wanted to come to Chestertown for years but had not been able to successfully get a location. I knew many who wanted them to come here and told that to the manager. Also, I sent a message to the town and the shopping center owner in hopes that it could be managed.
It probably didn’t take this effort to get things to work since Redner’s was looking for the opportunity anyhow. But, I am so thrilled that everything has worked out.

Editor,
Redners will give you a clean store. That said, their Deli and seafood is inferior to Acmes. They bring in a lot of meat from Mexico and Canada. They will bring in some local produce and will give good customer service. They have an esop program but the employees have no say in store operations. That said they are a good employer, have good benefits, offer a401k program with no match and a bonus program. They do not pay time and a half on Sunday
All in All Chestertown wins . You started out last year with two over the hill stores and now will have two new stores in town . The new Acme with all the Bells and whistles and The cookie cutter Redners a big box with all the charm of tract housing.

Editor,
Yeah – that is great – there is a Redner’s in Dover also. It would be hard for me to believe that their deli is inferior to Acme – Acme has awful deli
meats – they get sticky after a few days.
Acme is so crowded – the aisle – with junk and their customer service is the pits.
I will definitely support Redners even if the renovtions are fantastic. The gas discount program sounds wonderful.

Editor,
Hi, In my 40 years of experience in the food business, I have heard from many customers that after a few days in the refrigerator that their Cold Cuts got sticky. I would suggest that it is often not the store fault but how well the user handles the product once they get it home. Cold cuts should be kept in and air tight container, not just in the store packaging. ACME carries Dietz and Watson cold cuts, a very good brand( Redners carries a combination. The big difference is in Salads and selection. As far as the aisles being crowded, the store is being expanded to over 40,000 square feet and should solve the space issue. The customer service issue is one that has to do with the functionality of running an old store. The current store does not have a loading dock and the doors do not accommodate pallets. The deliveries have to be broken down in the back lot and then placed on hand trucks and then run into the store. This adds to the cost of labor and subtracts from the hours available for customer service. With the current store being so limited in space to allow only four slicers and seven registers limits how many customers can be served at any one time.
That said, the store expansion will cure all of these problems and bring the store into this century. They will have double the registers and will be able two add at least three more slicers. The store will get a state of the art receiving dock and will be able to take a fork lift into the back room thus will have hours freed up to spend on customer service.

Editor,
Hope they pick a gas station that has diesel for automobiles.

redners whouse markets are just like any food store, you have to know the prices, the acme at least uses union labor for building renovations paying a decent wage but they (acme) likes to confuse shoppers with their ads ending on a thursday instead of saturday when most people do their shopping so you don’t get bang for your buck.both stores will share the market instead of being held prisoner to one store, which is good for consumers.
