William Roy Walls, Sr., 78, of Centreville, was pronounced dead from an apparent self-inflicted wound that occurred during a gun battle with Queen Anne’s County Sheriffs late Tuesday evening.
“It remains under investigation if any rounds fired by deputies struck Walls, however there is evidence of a self-inflicted gun shot wound,” said a statement from the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to Walls’ residence at 121 White Marsh Rd. at around 10 p.m. after a female resident called 911 and reported being held captive by Walls.
Deputies arrived to find Walls in an aggravated state and returned fire after Walls discharged a shotgun.
Walls was declared dead at the scene after efforts to rescue him failed.
QAC Sheriff Gary Hofmann has requested an investigation by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit.
The three deputies involved in the gun battle have been placed on administrative leave and their service weapons have been turned over to crime scene technicians, a standard policy of the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office.
Court records indicate Walls was charged in a domestic violence case in 2003 and a protective order was issued against him.
