The Rolling Road Park, soon to be renamed the Margo Bailey Community Park, will receive close to 170 trees at a price of $32,000.
The Chestertown Town Council voted 5-0 Monday to approve a bid from Sharp Tree Service. The price comes with a one-year maintenance package that includes regular watering.
The bid was not in dollars but in the amount of trees that could be offered at $32,000 — the amount of a grant from the Middle Chester Trust Fund — and administered by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
The idea to rename the Rolling Road Park after retiring Mayor Margo Bailey came at the Oct. 21 council meeting when Bailey was away. Councilman Marty Stetson wanted to surprise Bailey on her return to Chestertown.
“I truly believe she really served this town well and to the best of her ability,” Stetson said at the Oct. 21 meeting. “And I think it would be a very fitting tribute.”
The dedication is expected in December.

As residents of College Heights, my wife and I use the walking track in the Rolling Road Park frequently. The park is a great addition to the neighborhood and to the town, and we couldn’t be more delighted that it is being named to honor Margo Bailey. We hope, however, that all that wonderful open space will not be filled with a forest of trees, when there is such a need for recreational space in this town. The park could provide space for more than one soccer field, a basketball court, tennis courts, etc. The Worton Park is wonderful, but inaccessible to many Chestertown youth. I hope that the Council will give careful consideration to the need for such facilities and will have the trees planted at the margens of the park rather than in the middle of the open space.
Sincerely,
George Shivers

Editor,
It is the Margo Baily Community Park not Memorial Park.
