The Chestertown Town Council last Tuesday voted unanimously to write a letter of support for Pamela Ortiz to be nominated to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.
“She is truly one of the most wonderful people in this community,” said Chestertown Mayor Margo Bailey at Tuesday’s council meeting. “We are very lucky to have her.” Bailey praised Ortiz for her years of volunteering in Chestertown.
The letter will go to the Judicial Nominating Commission, which will endorse a pool of candidates to send to Gov. Martin O’Malley.
Ortiz has a distinguished 20-year career in family law — as an administrator and educator in the areas of legal advocacy and social reform.
She was the Executive Director of the Department of Family Administration for nine years — and is currently the Executive Director of the Maryland Access to Justice Commission, which advocates for children and the indigent in Maryland’s court system.
Ortiz graduated cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 1992 and began her legal career in 1993 representing children with the Legal Aid Bureau in Baltimore.
In 2007 the Maryland Daily Record named Ortiz one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women.
