Where can you find out about World War II, the opera, the inside story of the Johnson administration, United Artists, the Civil War, or enhancing photographs — all from experts — without leaving Chestertown? Anyone who has taken part in the Washington College Academy of Lifelong Learning (WC-ALL) knows the answer.
WC-ALL has just released its fall catalog which includes almost 30 courses over two six-week sessions beginning September 8.
“We are offering a greater variety and more courses than ever for this fall,” said Bill Low, WC-ALL Council Chair. “We are grateful to the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River who have allowed us to use its facility for large classes. This supplements our usual Washington College classrooms, expanding our capability to accommodate increased demand.”
A sampling Some of the titles and instructors are Turner Smith – Civil War Navies; Sam Barnett – Satan, One Hell of a Guy; Sherwin Markman – Lyndon Johnson: Up Close and Personal; Jane Hukill and Dick Hawkins – Vital Ideas: Money; Gail Johnson – Journaling as Self Exploration; Clayton Newell – Civil War Basics; Charlotte Hawes – India Today; and John Gillespie – Celtic Music. All these and more courses are listed in the catalog.
Curriculum Committee Chair Dick Swanson reports “ Most of the course topics or content are new, but we are repeating some because of demand. There are a number of returning instructors, such as John Christie with The Supreme Court: Top Hits of 2012, who have graciously agreed to continue with courses this fall and a number of new instructors whose courses we look forward to.” Some courses are discussion format; others are a lecture format. In the case of the opera course, the class will go the Kennedy Center in Washington to see Tristan and Isolde, the focus of the four week study.
There’s plenty more. WC-ALL offers a free Fall Showcase, open to the public, which provides an overview of fall offerings and an opportunity to meet all the instructors. It will be held at 4:00 P.M. August 21 at Hotchkiss Recital Hall in Gibson Center for the Arts on the Washington College Campus.
The full range of courses can be found on line at https://www.washcoll.edu/offices/wc-all/. Membership and registration information is found here as well. On-line registration is encouraged.
