You may not know the phrase “Chibi is Kawaii” but the odds are very good that the teenagers you know do. Translating to “Tiny is Cute” it refers to the cute and childish style of anime that focuses on exaggerating the eyes, hands, face and animal characteristics. It is simple and fun to learn and is great for beginners.
Chibi classes will be Tuesdays on June 12, 19 and 26 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council’s Centre for the Arts in Centreville, Maryland. The class is open to children ages 8 to 15. Class cost is $65 for members and $80 for non-members.
A second art class, “Drawing Anime” focuses on the foundation of the Japanese style of cartoons. Students will explore basic techniques of this unique art form while expanding their personal drawing style. Drawing Anime will be Tuesdays on June 13, 19 and 26 from noon to 4 p.m. The class is open to children ages 12 to 18. Class cost is $85 for members and $100 for non-members.
Instructor Hanna Kingsley brings these two forms of anime classes to the Centre of the Arts as part of the summer visual arts program. Kingsley is a 2011 graduate of Queen Anne’s County High School and was a recipient of the 2011 Arts Council scholarship. She is currently enrolled at Chesapeake College studying art therapy. She is a regular visitor to the annual KatSuCon fan convention for anime, manga and Japanese culture enthusiasts which is held in Washington D.C.
