The Kent County Commissioners approved a $192,000 bid from the Stevensville-based Dissen & Juhn to dredge Rock Hall Harbor.
The project will be funded entirely by a $247,000 State Waterway Improvement grant from the Department of Natural Resources. The funds will be used to dredge the navigation entrance channel to Rock Hall Harbor.
Kent County Public Works Director Wayne Morris said there is a small window of time to start the project because of an agreement worked out with local and federal fisheries.
“We’ve already contacted the state and they’re going to mark the channel at the first of next week,” Morris said.
Commissioner Ron Fithian said the goal was to complete the dredging by June 1.
Commissioner Alex Rasin asked what would happen to the $55,000 excess from the grant and Morris was unsure.
“It is state funding, so I don’t know if we’ll be able to use it for anything else,” Morris said.
But Kent County Engineer James Wright told the Spy on Wednesday that $36,000 of the remaining funds will go to the David A. Bramble Company to place the dredged material on land. The remaining $19,000 will be set aside for contingencies.
