After 48 years with the Kent County Schools, and less than a year in retirement, Former Assistant KCPS Superintendent Fay Miller has returned to fill the gap made by the resignation of KCPS COO Dexter Lockamy.
“I’m just filling in where I was until a new person is hired and a transition occurs again,” Miller said. “I know the superintendent is interviewing replacements.”
Miller chuckled at the suggestion that she’s coming out of retirement, but said she enjoys working with her old friends.
Miller is working on a contractual basis until School Superintendent Dr. A. Barbara Wheeler has found a successor to Lockamy, who resigned in early June when the school board withdrew support for Lockamy’s $114,600 salary under the current budget challenges. The Board created the new position of Financial Supervisor For Kent County Schools as result of the budget negotiations in May.
“I see this as a temporary thing that I have agreed to with the Superintendent until she finds a replacement for Mr. Lockamy,” Miller said. “I’m sure everybody is hopeful this will occur before the end of the summer, I don’t know what [Wheeler’s] timeline is; she and I haven’t talked about that. I’m just looking forward to being good counsel and then returning to retirement after I’ve done my duty. I’m enjoying it, there are a lot of good people here.”
