Ready for gun-toting molls, Hardy Boys, The Flying Wolimskies and a wee bit of drama? It’s time for the annual “Short Attention Span Theatre,” June 17 through 26 at Garfield Center for the Arts at the Prince Theatre in Chestertown.
Three of the 10-minute plays were locally written; two through the Live Playwrights’ Society (a local writers’ workshop created through a collaboration between Church Hill Theatre and the Prince Theatre. Ten plays, nine directors and twenty-one actors. Phew. Perhaps that explains the need for three producers. Three of the directors are making their debuts, as well as six of the actors. The play “Off The Wall”, written and directed by Church Hill Theatre’s outgoing Executive Director, Steve Arnold, is most unfortunately, his final artistic endeavor in Kent County before he moves away.
Executive producer Mark Sullivan wrote in an email, ” We have folks from their teens to their 60’s. We have Teachers and Students and Builders and Engineers and Accountants and more! These are 45 of your friends, neighbors and co-workers who come together to create one unified production out of many, many moving parts. It’s a marvelous, crazy and slightly miraculous thing to behold from behind the scenes! ”
The Spy sneaked in for a peek at a recent rehearsal and snapped a few pictures. The scenes were marvelous, miraculous and thoroughly engaging in front of the stage as well.

I am personally biased (since my wife has been a “regular” in the 10 Minute Play Festival for several years now) but will say that it is the perfect venue for people who may be interested/curious about live theatre but have never been before.
The variety of work you will see is definitely worth your time and money, and if you don’t like a particular play… don’t worry, it will be over very soon.
Most people would be amazed at the amount of local talent that resides right here among all of us. The 10 Minute Play Festival is a way for you to see many of those talents on one stage.

As Mrs. Mark Sullivan I’m afraid I am equally biased…but that doesn’t mean that Kevin isn’t 100% right! I have had the pleasure and privilege of directing a couple of pieces in previous years’ SAST productions and it was an incredible experience. The wealth of talent we have in our community is truly overwhelming! How lucky we are to live in such a place with so many amazing people! Like Mark said come see your “friends, neighbors and co-workers” they might surprise you!
