Intellectual and developmental disabilities cover hundreds of mental and physical conditions that affect close to two percent of all children and adults living in the United States. These conditions also impact their parents and guardians, who must cope with sometimes overwhelming caregiver responsibilities for their loved ones. One of the few places on the Eastern Shore that offers support for these individuals, and relief to their parents, is our own Kent Center in Chestertown.
Kent’s Director (and guiding light) Carol Calloway, shares with the Spy the Center’s history, which started with a donation from local philanthropist Louisa duPont Carpenter in 1970, to create locally available, non-institutional, social and educational services for Kent County children. Director Callaway, and a devoted band of volunteers and staff, have created a remarkable service to those in need, which was originally called Angels’ Haven of Kent, and for good reason.
