Another charmer by the author of one of my favorite novels, “Bel Canto.” What strange and delightful characters are in this book. In Los Angeles, Sabine, the magician’s assistant, leads a happy though unconventional life. She is the odd person out in an intense romantic relationship between Parsifal, the magician, and Phan. Yet they both love her and she them. In Nebraska during an all encompassing blizzard and ice storm, the tensions and unhappiness of Parsifal’s conventional family, never before mentioned by him, are revealed. The villains are two bitter, controlling men – his father and his sister’s husband. Sabine offers hope and escape, sunshine and love.
