Kent County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Karen Couch, will address the next WC-ALL Learn at Lunch on Wednesday, March 16th. For those not familiar with local school personnel, Dr. Couch was appointed Superintendent of the Kent County Public Schools in July, 2013, after serving as Superintendent of Moriarty-Edgewood School District in New Mexico for 12 years.
Kent County has experienced dramatic demographic changes in recent years which have impacted most local institutions, not the least of which is the local public school system. Dr. Couch’s presentation entitled “Kent County Public Schools and Local Economy” will address some of the issues that arise within a school system when demographic changes occur. How does a school system adjust to these changes without impacting school quality? An excellent school system is an important economic engine for its community and ultimately for the quality of the entire community. Our local news media have featured discussions of school budget deficits and possible school closings, with recent County Council decisions appearing to change the dynamics once again. Dr. Couch’s talk will be a timely addition to this on-going conversation.
The public is invited to join members of the Washington College Academy of Lifelong Learning for the buffet lunch and lecture which will begin at noon in the Hynson Lounge in Hodson Hall, located on campus. The cost for WC-All members is $15; non-members $20. Pre-paid reservations are required and must be received by Thursday, March 10th. Make checks payable to WC-ALL and send to WC-ALL, 300 Washington Avenue, Chestertown, MD 21620. Please include name, telephone number and email address.
