On, Thursday, April 16, the Washington College Chorus will present a concert of choral and vocal music with guests from the Chester Chamber Singers and the Annapolis Chorale. The performances will feature a wide range of music, from Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and the Mozart “Ave verum corpus” to more modern works by Randall Thompson, Jackson Berkey and Marvin Hamlisch. “From the 18th century to Broadway, the music in this concert has a common thread, and that is that it is wonderful music to sing!” says Washington College Chorus directorJ. Ernest Green, who also serves as music director of the Annapolis Chamber Orchestra, music director and conductor for the Annapolis Chorale, and artistic director of Live Arts Maryland.
The musical collaboration will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Hotchkiss Recital Hall, Gibson Center for the Arts, on the College campus. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and Washington College staff and students from other colleges, and free for ages 18 and under and WC students. Advance tickets are available at washcoll.edu/music.
The WC String Orchestra is made up of student musicians and is directed by violinist and violist Kimberly McCollum. A lecturer at the College, McCollum performs orchestral music throughout Maryland and currently serves as associate concertmaster of the Annapolis Chamber Orchestra.
The Chester Chamber Singers are the auditioned component of the Chester River Chorale, an 85-voice community chorus under the direction of Douglas D. Cox, a conductor, singer, and producer who toured widely as the assistant conductor and tenor vocalist with the Soldiers’ Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band.
In full, the Annapolis Chorale comprises 180 voices from counties across Maryland and is one of the state’s premier musical ensembles. Though the Chorale has preformed twice at Carnegie Hall, “its mission continues to be to make life in this region richer and more enjoyable by performing the best live music,” says Green, its director and conductor.
