Is the J. DeWeese Carter Center being overhauled?
According to County Administrator Susie Hayman it is. At Tuesday’s meeting Hayman informed the commissioners that she had received an e-mail from Judge John Nunn notifying her that the state has decided to close the Carter Center as a pre-trial juvenile center. It will re-open the center as a post-trial center for female juveniles mostly from the western shore.
Hayman said that Nunn would keep them informed of any changes.
According to the state Department of Juvenile Services website, the Carter Center is a secure detention facility for 27 youth that serves the nine counties of the Eastern Shore.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting the commissioners approved a $98,500 budget adjustment for Kent County Public Schools. KCPS Supervisor of Finance Angie Councell said the adjustment was due to grants that have come in since the final budget was struck in June. The grants will help pay for programs that otherwise would not have been funded, she said, such as early morning drop off and a field trip for fourth graders aboard the schooner Sultana.
