On First Friday, August 5th, Fred Sprock will be the featured artist at The Artists Gallery. Fred is an oil painter of landscapes and still life, and has lived in Snow Hill since 2012. A native of North Carolina, Fred retired from a career in advertising to become a full time painter, studying with Dee Beard Dean, Morgan Samuel Price, Richard Fennell, Roger Dale Brown, Wayne McDowell and Stuart Shils.
While teaching beginning classes at The Upstairs Gallery in North Carolina, Fred would often instruct, “if you do this, that will happen.” It was then that he began to define for himself the difference between a “painter” and an “artist.” To become an “artist” a painter must abandon, to the extent possible, one’s knowledge base in order to ask “If I do this, what will happen?”
Sprock says, “Landscapes are complex. One of my goals is to simplify this jigsaw puzzle. On the other hand, a white bowl sitting on a white table appears simple. But when you really study it, that subject contains as much activity as a landscape. The challenge for me is to reveal to the viewer the complexity beneath the surface of this seemingly simple visual.”
The Artists Gallery is located at 239 High Street in Chestertown, MD. Works by Fred Sprock will be featured throughout the month of August. The Artists Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10-5 and Sunday, from 12:30 – 4:30.
