On Sun, Feb 8 10 AM, Ms. Margie Conlin will present a sermon entitled “The Freedom Riders of 1961″ for the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, 914 Gateway Dr., Chestertown.
In recognition of Black History Month, UUCR’s Social Concerns/Social Justice Committee is creating a special service. Margie Conlin will present a talk, “The Freedom Riders of 1961,” which will chronicle two busses that left for the deep south, one from Washington, D.C. on a Mother’s Day morning in May ’61, and one 13 days later from Nashville, Tennessee. Most riders were young; many were students who thought the worst they would face would be no seats at lunch counters and segregated seating at the bus terminals. What they didn’t foresee was the level of life-threatening violence, brought about by the baseball bats, metal pipes, rubber hoses and more, that they would encounter for the next twenty days. These events helped bring racial injustice to national attention. Against this historical backdrop, SC/SJ has planned a thought-provoking service of music, memories and discussion. As guest musicians, there will be a return visit from our favorite gospel group, “Pilgrim Travelers of Pomona Gospel Singers.”
Plan to arrive at 9:30 AM for “A Gathering” in the Sanctuary, when their spirited music will begin to fill the church and continue throughout the service. This will be a service of reflection, spirit and celebration. Come join us!
