During the month of February, the Chestertown Branch of the Kent County Public Library is pleased to be hosting “Emancipation in Kent County, Maryland.” This exhibit, written and conceptualized by Dr. Jeanette Sherbondy, was created for the Historical Society of Kent County in cooperation with the Kent County Arts Council as a commemoration of Maryland’s Emancipation Day. The exhibit may be viewed at any time the library is open.
The 11-panel exhibit traces the path toward emancipation in Kent County, Maryland starting with the arrival of the first African slaves and moving through the Civil Rights Era. It also highlights the history of the famous abolitionist, educator, and speaker Henry Highland Garnet who was born in Kent County Maryland, and who worked tirelessly to further the cause of emancipation.
Those interested in learning more about Henry Highland Garnet, are also invited to attend “Native Son: A Documented History of Henry Highland Garnet” which will be presented at the Chestertown Branch on Saturday, February 28, 2015, by Maryland State Archives researcher Maya Davis. This program is free and open to all.
