Queen Anne’s County University of Maryland Master Gardeners will hold their 4th annual “Garden Affair” on Saturday, May 21. It’s wonderfully kid-friendly and takes place on the green lawn beneath the trees behind and around Historic Wright’s Chance and the Centreville Library.
It’s fun for all ages and gardeners, whether experienced or clueless, and a great way to introduce your kids to the magical world of gardening – including growing their own vegetables and fruits, which gives them a big incentive to eat well.
There will be bees, worms, and bugs for the creepy-crawly-inclined, a scavenger/treasure hunt that was a huge success last year, face painting, and a fabulous face cutout that kids can stick their mugs through for memorable pictures. We’ll be hammering chlorophyll at the kids’ craft table and kids can learn about the watershed’s effect on the bay through UMD Sea Grant’s interactive watershed model. Gardeners at the Grow It Eat It will let kids know how to grow some of their own food, which is not only satisfying, but effortlessly teaches lessons in the rewards of patience and satisfaction in the work of their hands. Sabine Harvey, Kent County Horticulture Educator and fellow Master Gardener will show pictures of the two school gardens she started and grows with the students of Chestertown Middle and Worton Elementary schools.
There will be music and the 4-H is offering hot dogs, chips and sodas. The bake sale table is your one-stop shop for dessert. And kids can walk away with the beginnings of their own gardens courtesy of the plant sale table. Parking is easy. There will also be a raffle for a Leopold Bench, a lovely and practical garden seat-cum ornament that is going for a song.
