Artificial turf has been used for years on ball fields and is touted by many for its ‘green’ attributes. It needs no fertilizer, no pesticides, no mowing, and no water, which utility companies estimate saves up to 22,000 gal of water per year at a typical home. In fact, some utility companies in drought-prone areas offer a rebate for installing artificial turf. But the drawbacks may outweigh the pluses. It offers an impermeable surface to whatever rainfall there is, the resources to make it are mostly petroleum-based, and it has a warranted life of 8-12 years.
