Chino Farms owner, Dr. Henry F. Sears, was honored for his generosity to the Washington College equestrian team at the inaugural meeting of the Chestertown Horseman’s Club on Saturday, December 10. The Christmas gathering at the home of David Turner and his partner, Ran Crawford, drew horse lovers from a broad range of disciplines including foxhunting/hunt clubs, dressage, therapeutic riding, carriage driving, western, eventing, hunter/jumpers, farm owners and boarding facilities, equine artists, Kent County 4H Bits & Bridles Pony Club, the Washington College Equestrian Team and the Maryland Horse Council.
Jane Seigler, president of the Maryland Horse Council, emceed the evening and announced the 2016 recipient of the Kent County Cup. The Cup is a 1835 William IV Sheffield silver beverage server awarded to someone in the community who has displayed a love for the equine sport. Dr. Sears was selected this year by Kent County’s Bits & Bridles Pony Club, led by Mrs. Bert Landauer, for making Chino Farms available for the Washington College Equestrian Club’s annual Foxchase fundraiser.
Next year, the college’s equestrian team will select a winner for similar generosity on behalf of an entirely different club or riding discipline. The Kent County Cup will reside in the hearing chambers of the Chestertown City Hall in perpetuity. The names of future winners will join those of Dr. Sears engraved on it.
Maryland Delegate Jay Jacobs was also in attendance and presented a state proclamation to Dr. Sears, noting the “good citizenship” aspect of Sears’ contribution to the horse community.
The new Chestertown Horsemen’s Club is a new and unique networking opportunity for those who love the equestrian sport. There are no dues to participate in this network group of fellow horsemen. Club membership includes quarterly network meetings and talks with various expert speakers. Guest speakers will discuss topics such as equestrian marketing and outreach by the Maryland Horse Industry Board, preserving open spaces for horses, and more.
