Maryland’s statewide celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the Maryland STEM Festival, will be held November 4 – 13, 2016. This second annual Festival features more than 450 independently hosted STEM events, most of them free and open to the public, in every county across the state. The mission of the Maryland STEM Festival is to inspire and encourage students and families of all backgrounds to take a greater interest in STEM.
The Maryland STEM Festival officially opens on Friday, November 4, with a joint program between the Maryland Science Center and the National Aquarium. The program begins 10:00 AM – Noon at the Maryland Science Center with several speakers including Paul Fipp, Chief Technology Officer from Under Armour. The second portion of the program takes place at the National Aquarium from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. The public is welcome to engage in hands-on STEM exhibits and activities at both locations. The national podcast, This Week in Science (www.twis.org), will do a live webcast of their show at the Aquarium starting at 2:00 PM.
Prominent organizations hosting Maryland STEM Festival events include NASA, The Maryland Zoo, Maryland Public Television, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Stevenson University, Morgan State University and dozens of other universities, public and private schools, and independent STEM organizations throughout the state. Maryland’s public libraries are hosting nearly half of the Festival events. Events run the gamut from Creative Cosmetics to a Night of Cybersecurity to a Robotics Roundup. There are star parties, career fairs, coding classes, story times, 3D printing workshops, magic shows, movies, plays, nature hikes, cooking classes and much more.
Last year, more than 50,000 Maryland residents attended Maryland STEM Festival events. This statewide celebration of STEM is produced in collaboration with Maryland non-profit, STEMaction, Inc (www.STEMaction.org).
