If you want to know what we’re up against with emerging diseases, read “The Coming Plague” by Laurie Garrett, published in 1995 and still available through Kent County Public Library, Kindle, etc. I read it back then and again this spring, and it is more scary now to realize that we are repeating many of the mistakes made years ago with earlier emerging diseases whose names are now too familiar. Ms Garrett is a very serious writer on these topics: she has won the three P’s of journalism prizes — Polk, Peabody, and Pulitzer — and now works for the Council on Foreign Relations.
