The Garfield Center of the Arts will present the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “A Delicate Balance” by Edward Albee opening on Friday, October 14th, and directed by Bonnie Hill.
The production will run for two weekends, ending October 23rd. Performances are at 8PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and 3PM on Sundays. A talk back with the director and actors is scheduled for Sunday, October 16th after the show.
All illusions are stripped away, and raw emotion and reality are exposed in this biting, dark comedy, set in upper middle class suburbia in the early 1960’s. A Delicate Balance focuses on six lives resting on the precipice between comfortable complacency and complete collapse. The arrival of three unexpected guests over the course of a weekend tips the balance.
When the play opens, we meet Agnes and Tobias, played by Mary Watko and Tim Maloney, a “perfectly normal” married couple, who have not slept together in 20 years. Catherine Bushby is featured as Claire, the prodigal live-in sister, who drinks too much and delights in trading barbs with Agnes. Julia, played by Heather Oland, arrives home after her fourth failed marriage, to seek refuge and comfort, only to find her room occupied by Harry and Edna (David Ryan and Lynn McClain, respectively), who are seeking to escape an undefined terror.
Production Staff includes Producer Jim Landskroener, Assistant Director Hester Sachse, Technical Director Butch Clark, Stage Managers Mike Cades and Kayla Klugman, with the set designed by Earl Lewin. Set decoration and properties were done by Jennifer Kafka Smith and Cynthia Fields, with Barbi Bedell as Costume Mistress. Judy Kohl served as Dramaturge, and Steve Atkinson was Photographer.
Edward Albee passed away on September 16th, 2016 – this production is presented in his memory, as a celebration of one of America’s greatest Playwrights.
Tickets for A Delicate Balance are $15 general admission and $5 for students. They can be purchased online at www.garfieldcenter.org or by calling the box office at 410-810-2060. The Garfield Center for the Arts is located at 210 High Street in Chestertown.
