Kent County’s five elementary schools hosted “Back to School Night” on Thursday, September 15. Students and their parents were invited into their children’s elementary schools to meet teachers and administrators. It also served as an opportunity for parents to learn about and join their school’s Parent Teacher Association. This annual event is a key opportunity for parents, teachers and administrators to open the line of communication that will benefit the schools’ children throughout the year.
Teachers welcomed parents into their classrooms and shared updates on what their children are studying. Students were able to show their parents where they spend their days, as well as show off some work or projects already completed or under way. Garnet Elementary principal Brenda Rose says “Our Back to School Night affords our parents, teachers and students the opportunity to help create a partnership and understanding of each other’s expectations for the coming school year. Visiting the classroom and meeting teachers and families helps us start the school year off on a positive note and, ultimately, lead to a successful learning experience.”
The Worton Parent Teacher Association sponsored a photo booth for families to take fun pictures of the night. PTA president Jessica Machuga says ” The focus of our PTA is getting back to helping our school and community realize that our school is still open and functioning. Our goal is to bring our families back, and to reassure them that we love our school and that we are still going strong.”
Millington Elementary School’s PTA provided dinner so busy families could attend. Parent Rebecca Heriz-Smith says “I love Back to School night. Our PTA always puts out a good dinner, and many families help by bringing additional sides and desserts. That helps draw families out. It’s really nice to be able to tour the classrooms with my kids and see what they’ve worked on so far, as well as meet their teachers in a stress free, friendly environment.”
Across the county, turn-out was high and Back to School Night was considered a success. It was a good opportunity for families to connect with teachers, administrators, and other parents. The stage has been set for a successful year for all the county’s elementary students.
