A high-tide flooded the Chestertown marina area and Fish Whistle Restaurant parking lot Wednesday morning during what is described as a “low high-tide.” Tonight another high tide could threaten the area once again.
As Mayor Chris Cerino and Sultan Education Foundation President Drew McMullen point out, these flood tides could have drastic impacts on Chestertown’s image and economic future. If a tide like this occurred during Downrigging Weekend, one of the Eastern Shore’s premier events could be terminated.
“Many people don’t realize that high tides constantly flood this area,” McMullen says. This one, though, is higher than usual. Dock areas, including the town dock at the end of High Street, were submerged.
The 139′ schooner America, a replica of the famous winner of the winner of the 1851 Isle of Wight race, is docked in Chestertown for a single day of tours and a public sail. Crews from America and Sultana hastily covered the slick docks with plywood to encourage visitors to continue their interest in the ship.
