Sofia Ortiz is a 21-year-old guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. She is the daughter of two working musicians and grew up in Chestertown Maryland under the influence of their acoustic-folk leanings.
Her lyrics tend to weave together themes of personal experience and observation while tying them to the natural world. Her music has such diverse influences as the English singer/songwriter Nick Drake who died in 1974 but has developed a strong posthumus following, the Norwegian singer/songwriter Ane Brune who lives in Sweden, the Scottish electronic music duo Boards of Canada and the Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
As an emerging songwriter and performer, she has played solo concerts at small venues including the Rock Hall Pavilion, Robert Ortiz Studios and The Root Cellar, a venue at Bard College where she is currently a student.
This project was made possible by support from the Hedgelawn Foundation. It will be a departure from her usual solo work and has allowed her to develop arrangements for a band in collaboration with Andrew Wade on drums and Jeff Davis on bass who will appear with her at The Mainstay.
The Mainstay (Home of Musical Magic) is the friendly informal storefront performing arts center on Rock Hall’s old time Main Street. It is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit dedicated to the arts, serving Rock Hall, MD and the surrounding region.
