“Capture This” will open First Friday, August 5, in the RiverArts Main Gallery, 5:00-8:00pm. This annual judged photography show is highly popular with historically wide-ranging participation. In this show photographers seek to capture a fleeting moment where light, subject, and mood all merge into a unique image, using a broad range of photographic processes.
Show awards will include a prize for “Best in Show,” and Merit Awards for First Place in a variety of categories: Nature and Wildlife, Scenic, Street Life, Human Subjects, Portraiture, Abstracts, Black and White, and Creative Digital Enhancement. Visitors are encouraged to vote for the “People’s Choice Award” at the opening reception.
The show’s judge is Lynn Parks, a Baltimore-based photographer, environmental artist, and curator who monitors and provides outreach for Lights Out Baltimore (LOB), an avian conservation group that strives to make Baltimore safe for birds. Lynne’s works have been widely exhibited in such venues as the Baltimore Museum of Art, Goucher College, George Mason University and here at Washington College. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including the “Baltimore Sun” and “Bird Conservation” magazine.
The show’s curator and juror is Karen Klinedinst, a landscape photographer based in Baltimore. She has a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Since 2011, she has been using her iPhone and iPad exclusively to photograph and express the landscape, creating landscapes influenced by 19th century Romanticism with 21st century technology. Her landscape photography has been exhibited widely including the Massoni Art Gallery, Adkins Arboretum, Maryland Art Place, the Biggs Museum, and many more. In 2015 she was awarded an Individual Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council.
“Fiber, Glass, Steel,” exhibited in the Studio Gallery, exemplifies fine technique and stunning color in fiber art creations by Joyce Murrin and kiln formed glass by Sabra Richards. Both artists are nationally and internationally recognized, award winning artists whose works are represented in private, public, museum and corporate collections.
