While the loss of a spouse is undoubtedly one of the worst possible things that can happen to someone, it also can be said that losing one’s law partner after several decades of working together can be very disruptive as well.
That’s what happened to Genie Wootton after Alex Rasin, her law partner for close to thirty years, passed away last December at the age of 72. Alex’s absence was compounded by the fact that he has played so many key leadership roles in the community, from County Commissioner to chairing the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy in a lifetime of service to Kent County.
The good news in the midst of these sad circumstances, is that Alex and Genie, reflecting their long professional experience with family businesses, had several in-depth conversations about succession plans for Rasin, Wootton & Hurd. And the most important decision they made prior to Alex’s passing was the strong conviction of keeping the firm going for a new generation to inherit and continue Alex and Genie’s commitment to have the law practice continue to serve both their clients and they community they love.
In her Spy interview, Genie talk about life after Alex and her excitement that two young attorneys, one of whom is her daughter, have joined Rasin, Wootton & Hurd in the years since her partner passed away. She also reflects on the importance of keeping firms like hers alive and well in small towns like Chestertown and their pro bono contributions to its financial and legal health.
