As a benefit for the Kent County Food Pantry, Washington College is hosting its third-annual Festival of the Arts, featuring a variety of performances. The Departments of Drama and Music, as well as the student-run Music Collegium and Musicians Union, sponsor the festival. For each performance, they ask guests to bring a non-perishable food item or a cash donation in order to support those in need.
The Festival began dramatically on November 7 and 8 with performances of The Lucky Ladies, by Dominic Finocchiaro, a Senior Directing Thesis by Matt Ridge. All remaining events are music concerts.
The Washington College Jazz Ensemble and Steel Pan Ensemble will perform in a joint concert November 20, at7:30 p.m. in Hotchkiss Recital Hall. The performance is presented by the Music Department at the College and admission is free.
On November 21, 2014, the all-female, student-run singing group No Limits will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Hodson Hall, The Egg. Admission is free.
Later in the semester, on December 4, the Music Department presents the Washington College Concert Band and Chamber Music concert at 7:30 p.m. in Hotchkiss Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Suggested donations for each event include canned meats such as tuna, stew and chili, canned vegetables, pasta and pasta sauce, beans, healthy cereals, and peanut butter and jelly. The organizations ask that guests bring only non-perishable, non-expired items with packaging that is intact and not breakable (for example, no glass).
The Kent County Food pantry benefitted from more than $1,000 in food and cash donations in the first year of the Festival (2012). Last year, the Festival raised over $400 for Garnett Elementary School to support arts programs for their students.
